Product Description

Art & Soul Leather Journal
Sunday, November 10th, 1:00 - 4:00pm
Instructor: Annie Reiser

Slip this compact and unusual leather journal into your purse, pocket, or pack for whenever inspiration strikes you! Sketching, painting, writing – your book is always at hand for those odd and unexpected spare moments when you’re out and about. Annie Reiser, a local artist of many trades, calls the book her Art and Soul journal. She was inspired to create it when browsing through Bound by Hand: Over 20 Artful Handmade Books, by Erica Ekrem. Erica is known for her novel approach to using traditional techniques – perfect for Annie, who enjoys pushing the boundaries of her own art. She’s added a special twist to Erica’s poet journal with a fine Italian leather cover, and is delighted to step you through making one of your own. Before class Annie will wash, weight, and condition the leather covers, then have the front laser-engraved with her original feather design. During class she’ll show you how to tear down the 98-lb mixed media paper for the text block, how to bind the pages to the cover, and how to add the special brass closure. She’ll also explore with you the many ways to fill, and even refill, your journal, which is about 3x8 inches. Add personal touches by choosing the inside decorative cover pages and adding a specially designed colophon (finishing touch) that identifies the book and the bookmaker – you! Your finished journal is perfect for impromptu landscape paintings, flower sketches, other pen and ink drawings, plus calligraphy, daily notes, quotes, and poems. So that you can make more journals at home, Annie will have kits for sale with a variety of cover designs.

Please bring the following materials:

If for any reason Two Hands Paperie cancels a class, students will be called at the phone number on file and refunded the FULL class fee.

Instructor Bio
Coming full circle, Annie Reiser has returned to what feeds her soul – art. Years ago she earned degrees in both art and German but got sidetracked by life. Family and career took her down other pathways, though art has always been a lifetime companion. A potter, spinner, knitter, weaver, and painter, Annie now devotes more of her creative time to illustrating nature. She is a graduate of the Denver Botanic Gardens School of Botanical Art and Illustration, where she teaches part-time, and is an active member of the Rocky Mountain Society of Botanical Artists and the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators. She is also a certified Zentangle® teacher (CZT) and has incorporated that practice into her daily life. In 2017 she was part of an 11-person group exhibit from the Denver School of Botanical Art & Illustration at the annual botanical art show held in London by the Royal Horticultural Society. Their entry received a Group Gold Medal Award. Her artwork has been displayed in juried shows and published in books.

In her day job, Annie writes, edits, and educates the public about the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Boulder, Colorado, where she’s worked for 19 years. She uses her art and language skills to develop educational and informational materials that translate complex scientific research into more simplified concepts. See examples of her work on www.botangle.net.
