Assemblage – An Artistic Journey NEW!
Saturday, April 29, 11:30-4:30pm.
Instructor: Carolyn Sweeney
Assemblage is three-dimensional art made by grouping unrelated objects, which are often strange castoffs, small natural wonders, broken bits, and other odds and ends. The appeal of assemblage is its seemingly irrational juxtaposition of objects. Finished pieces aren’t strictly realistic or abstract; they instead hint at a story or otherworldly adventure. This class is an exploration in combining all possible materials for artistic purposes. Think of misshapen wood, metal, door knobs, rusty nails, broken toys or china, small figures, a bird’s nest – anything that catches your eye! This class focuses on creating a shadow box in the style of Joseph Cornell, an American artist who pioneered assemblage. Carolyn Sweeney, a Two Hands Paperie veteran, will show you techniques for building up, arranging, and layering objects in a reclaimed cigar box to create a miniature tableau. Join her for a journey of pure artistic exploration.
Please bring the following materials:
- Craft knife (X-Acto, for example) with sharp blades
- Optional: Odds and ends plus personal mementos (the stranger the better!) from your own stash.
- Optional: Favorite pair of scissors for fine cutting.
- Optional: Apron.
Cancellations made up to 14 days prior to the first class meeting will be refunded or, at the participant's option, used to pay for another class. Two Hands Paperie will retain a $10 processing fee for EACH class cancelled by a participant. After 14 days, there is no refund or credit. In addition, the fee for a class cancelled within this 14-day timeframe by a participant cannot be transferred to pay for another class. These policies are to ensure that teachers are compensated for their investment in materials and in time spent preparing for the class. We reserve the right to cancel a class if fewer than 3 students enroll 48 hours prior to the scheduled class time. If for any reason Two Hands Paperie cancels a class, students will be called at the phone number on file and refunded the FULL class fee.
Carolyn Sweeney is the owner, designer, and print artist behind Black Dog Press, a local letterpress printing company. When she isn't printing wedding invitations, stationery, and greeting cards, she's an enthusiastic, part time staff member of Two Hands Paperie. With an educational background in Fine Arts and Architecture, Carolyn finds pleasure in tiny and exacting creative endeavors, such as setting type to use in a 100-year-old letter press machine or creating miniature worlds in old candy tins.
