Product Description

Clamshell Box with Pop Up Book NEW!
TWO DAYS: Saturday October 13, 10:30-5:30pm & Sunday October 14, 11:30-4:30pm

Instructor: Richard Pollock-Nelson
Intermediate/Advanced Level Class
Richard Pollack-Nelson is a trained bookbinder, but we’re thinking that he should be called a book engineer instead. He’s created quite an unusual structure by combining a clamshell box, a slip cover, a small journal, and a pop-up mechanism. Here’s how it works: rest the clamshell on its spine, open the covers, and the journal automatically rises out of the slipcover that’s inside the clamshell. It’s hard to explain in words. If your initial reaction, like ours, is “what?!!”, look at the pictures at http://www.handbounddesigns.com/boxes-and-slip-cases/. As you might guess, this project requires precise measuring and cutting skills (think millimeters), but you couldn’t be in better hands than Richard’s. He’ll have templates and diagrams for you to work with and will teach you how to measure and cut accurately. He’ll also have some of the measuring and cutting done beforehand. The first day is devoted to making the clamshell and slip cover; the second focuses on binding the journal with a Coptic stitch, then assembling everything together. Richard points out that the project “isn’t for rookies”. You’ll need to be comfortable with covering book board and assembling 3-D structures. You also need to have experience binding signatures together. Knowledge of the Coptic stitch is helpful. Stretch your bookbinding skills by working on this unique project!

Please bring the following materials to class:
  • Olfa Knife/scapel/X-acto knife with sharp blades and refills. Richard likes the Olfa knife because of its very fine, very sharp blade
  • Sharp scissors for fine cutting
  • Apron/work clothes
  • Optional- Lunch/water bottle (30 min. break each day)

Cancellation Policy
Cancellations made up to 14 days prior to the first class meeting will be refunded or, at the participant's option, used to pay for another class. Two Hands Paperie will retain a $10 processing fee for EACH class cancelled by a participant. After 14 days, there is no refund or credit. In addition, the fee for a class cancelled within this 14-day timeframe by a participant cannot be transferred to pay for another class. These policies are to ensure that teachers are compensated for their investment in materials and in time spent preparing for the class. We reserve the right to cancel a class if fewer than 3 students enroll 48 hours prior to the scheduled class time. If for any reason Two Hands Paperie cancels a class, students will be called at the phone number on file and refunded the FULL class fee.

Instructor Bio
Richard Pollock-Nelson’s love of fountain pens led him to bookbinding. While at the San Francisco International Pen Show in 2012 he bought himself a handmade journal. Looking at it, Richard decided he could make one himself. Though he hadn’t had any classes and, in his words, didn’t know what he was doing, he figured things out. His Christmas gifts that year? Lovely handmade journals with faux cowhide covers! Richard has since embraced bookbinding, attending advanced classes and earning a certification in bookbinding from the San Francisco Center for the Book. He’s best known to the Two Hands Paperie Community for the unusual cigar box journals carried in the store. Two of them were displayed at the American Bookbinders Museum in San Francisco during an annual exhibit held by the Hand Bookbinders of California. Besides cigar boxes, Richard also enjoys working with goat leather, Japanese paper, hand marbled papers, and other specialty materials. Richard still loves fountain pens and continues to attend pen shows, but now as an exhibitor selling his handmade journals. They are, of course, fountain pen friendly. Learn more about Richard’s work at www.handbounddesigns.com
