Encaustic gives the artist the freedom (and challenge) to experiment with a variety of tools and techniques while painting with wax and fire! Working on wood panels you will create texture, gradation of color, multi layering, carved lines and patterns, added text and images, and more. The possibilities are endless. Learn basic encaustic techniques while giving yourself permission to play. No previous encaustic experience is required.
One-day Encaustic Topics Classes For Intermediate-Advanced Level Students:
*Have a Heart: Encaustic Painting With A Heart Theme
Sunday, February 5, 9-4 pm

Instructor: Alix Christian
Working with a prescribed “heart” theme can provide a way to open up your creative process. Working on multiple panels, you will collage, embed, transfer, texturize, carve and fill with encaustic paint.

Using text, letterforms, alphabet, typewriter and script we will communicate our way into art with wax and layers. The text becomes a visual image. Using collage, transfer, stencil and carving we will work on multiple images as we go.

In this class you will work with quick ideas and warm-up exercises, listening to the artistic muse and intuition and letting the process guide our play with wax and fire. You will use multiple panels and push past our comfort zone into new and different ways to think and feel about our art.
*Wax + Paper: Encaustic Collage in Book Form

Instructor: Alix Christian
Encaustic typically uses a hard surface as a support for melted beeswax. In this class you will study how thin layers of wax medium with and without pigmented color affects and changes the properties of paper. Alix will demonstrate techniques ranging from scratching, burning, perforating, sanding, collaging, and stenciling. You will end the class by binding your experiments into a simple book.
