Classic Calligraphy – The Pointed Pen
Saturday, February 29th, 10:30 - 4:30PM
Instructor: Megan Goodenough
This class is a wonderful introduction to the fascinating world of classic and pointed pen calligraphy. The word calligraphy comes from ancient Greek and means beautiful writing. In the West it’s traditionally been used to describe sets of letters used in writing by hand. Different from the looser styles of Asian and modern calligraphy, these scripts are characterized by structured shapes for the characters and specific rules for spacing. The pointed pen is the focus of this class, It has a flexible nib that, with the inherent and subtle irregularities of its lines, creates a particular beauty. Explore its use with local calligrapher Megan Maksimovich while learning a basic alphabet that’s inspired by the classic Spencerian and Copperplate scripts. She’ll start with which nibs, inks, and papers work best for the beginning calligrapher. Then she’ll provide some simple exercises so you can get comfortable using the pointed pen to create thick and thin lines in a single stroke. After practicing cursive handwriting and the shaped alphabet, you can letter a favorite phrase or haiku on fine calligraphy paper. You’ll leave class with a solid foundation in shape and form for classic cursive calligraphy and with a small travel kit of supplies.
