Drawing as Meditation Class
Saturday, July 20th, 11:00-1:30PM
Instructor: Cynthia Morris
Creativity coach and artist Cynthia Morris had always been attracted to meditation because of the reported benefits, but she felt uncomfortable with traditional approaches. She says of herself, “I can’t sit still!” (We can relate.) She discovered the Frederick Franck book Zen Seeing, Zen Drawing: Meditation in Action in 1996, fell in love with the method, and has been practicing it ever since. Cynthia developed this beginning drawing class as a way of sharing the practice with others. The class combines two disciplines – drawing and meditation – as a way of slowing down and becoming more mindful. You’ll experience the calming effects of drawing firsthand as you work on techniques selected by Cynthia to start you on your journey. The tools are simple: a pen or pencil, some paper, and less time than you might think. The value is huge: a state of heightened awareness in which you tune into yourself yet also see more of what’s around you. A previous student said, “It changed how I frame the world.” Though full of techniques and time to practice, this class is less about the drawing itself than where drawing can take you.
Please bring the following materials:
- Nothing but an open mind and perhaps a small notebook to take notes in.
Cancellations made up to 14 days prior to the first class meeting will be refunded or, at the participant's option, used to pay for another class. Two Hands Paperie will retain a $10 processing fee for EACH class cancelled by a participant. After 14 days, there is no refund or credit. In addition, the fee for a class cancelled within this 14-day timeframe by a participant cannot be transferred to pay for another class. These policies are to ensure that teachers are compensated for their investment in materials and in time spent preparing for the class. We reserve the right to cancel a class if fewer than 3 students enroll 48 hours prior to the scheduled class time. If for any reason Two Hands Paperie cancels a class, students will be called at the phone number on file and refunded the FULL class fee.
Cynthia Morris, a published author and creativity coach, has been keeping written journals since 1994 and started filling them with colorful illustrations in 2004. She has written two e-books on how anyone can use art-making techniques to enjoy life more. Her mission? To help people have more fun and feel more creative. When Cynthia's not in her Denver office, she's riding her bicycle, practicing yoga, frolicking in the park, whipping up a feast in the kitchen, snuggled up reading a book, or popping over to Europe. Through her company Original Impulse, Cynthia leads creativity workshops in Europe like the one she teaches at Two Hands Paperie. She finds that keeping an illustrated journal makes her happy.
