Encaustic- Layering Paper Class
Saturday, December 1st, 10:00 - 3:30PM
Instructor: Alix Christian
There are so many encaustic techniques! This class is all about experimenting with hot wax and layers of various papers to create an unusual collage built on paper, working directly on a hot palette. The melted wax medium transforms paper and ephemera in unexpected and surprising ways. Papers become translucent. Colors change. Images are softened. Because of the almost imperceptible thickness of the wax, successive layers create a subtle but rich visual depth. Join artist Alix Christian in her studio for this one-day class to see how introducing a new medium into your kit of techniques can change your work. This class is for both new and experienced students. Alix will cover basic information at the beginning of the class, such as how to use the warm wax as the “glue” and how to distribute images across the paper substrate. The finished papers can be made into a book or a card, or used themselves as pieces ready for framing. Experienced students can move right ahead at their own pace while Alix helps newer students get started. The class is held at the instructor’s studio in North Boulder at 4593 North Broadway, C-105. There is a short lunch break at a coffee shop that’s down the street and has a small selection of lunch items.
Please bring the following optional materials:
- Optional: a magazine or two and any favorite collage papers, fabric, ribbon, string, or other ephemera.
- Optional: an apron.
- Optional: sack lunch and water bottle. There will be a short break at a coffee shop that’s down the street and has a small selection of lunch items.
Cancellations made up to 14 days prior to the first class meeting will be refunded or, at the participant's option, used to pay for another class. Two Hands Paperie will retain a $10 processing fee for EACH class cancelled by a participant. After 14 days, there is no refund or credit. In addition, the fee for a class cancelled within this 14-day timeframe by a participant cannot be transferred to pay for another class. These policies are to ensure that teachers are compensated for their investment in materials and in time spent preparing for the class. We reserve the right to cancel a class if fewer than 3 students enroll 48 hours prior to the scheduled class time. If for any reason Two Hands Paperie cancels a class, students will be called at the phone number on file and refunded the FULL class fee.
Alix Christian likes to play with fire. She's an encaustic artist who mixes beeswax and tree resin with pigmented colors, then heats the layers with a blow torch. Alix earned her BFA in Portland, Oregon, and her MFA in West Texas. Her work has been exhibited as far south as Texas and New Mexico, north from Minnesota to Michigan, and across the Atlantic in Assisi, Italy. Alix taught Fine Art and Computer Graphics at Amarillo College for seven years, and has resided in Colorado since 2010. Though typography is a love of hers, encaustic was "the first medium to catch me and now it won't let go". See Alix's work at alixchristian.com or on Facebook.
