Encaustic – Photo Transfers NEW!
Friday, April 7, 9-3 PM
Instructor: Alix Christian
Photos are transformed in unusual ways with encaustic. Part of the fun is seeing how the printed piece reacts with the medium. The image taken from a laser or xerox printer may take on an ethereal quality or suddenly look vintage. It might be sharply defined or look like it’s been distressed. Adding more layers and extra colors of medium to the image offers design possibilities not possible with other transfer techniques. To learn this unique way of preserving treasured photos, join Alix in her studio for a fun day of exploration. This class is for both new and experienced students. Alix will cover basic information at the beginning of the class, and then will demonstrate the specific technique. Experienced students can move right ahead at their own pace while Alix helps newer students get started. The class is held at the instructor’s studio in North Boulder. The address will be emailed to registered students a few days before class. There is a short lunch break.
Please bring the following optional materials:
- Alix will provide photo images for you to work with, but feel free to bring your own images to fit a 6”x6” or smaller format. Make copies since an original will be destroyed by the process. The copies must be toner based, that is, printed on a laser printer or Xeroxed. INKJET COPIES WILL NOT WORK.
- Optional: an apron and sack lunch and water bottle (There is a coffee shop with a small selection of lunch items across the street.)
Cancellations made up to 14 days prior to the first class meeting will be refunded or, at the participant's option, used to pay for another class. Two Hands Paperie will retain a $10 processing fee for EACH class cancelled by a participant. After 14 days, there is no refund or credit. In addition, the fee for a class cancelled within this 14-day timeframe by a participant cannot be transferred to pay for another class. These policies are to ensure that teachers are compensated for their investment in materials and in time spent preparing for the class. We reserve the right to cancel a class if fewer than 3 students enroll 48 hours prior to the scheduled class time. If for any reason Two Hands Paperie cancels a class, students will be called at the phone number on file and refunded the FULL class fee.
Alix Christian likes to play with fire. She's an encaustic artist who mixes beeswax and tree resin with pigmented colors, then heats the layers with a blow torch. Alix earned her BFA in Portland, Oregon, and her MFA in West Texas. Her work has been exhibited as far south as Texas and New Mexico, north from Minnesota to Michigan, and across the Atlantic in Assisi, Italy. Alix taught Fine Art and Computer Graphics at Amarillo College for seven years, and has resided in Colorado since 2010. Though typography is a love of hers, encaustic was "the first medium to catch me and now it won't let go". See Alix's work at alixchristian.com or on Facebook.
