Letterpress- Analog Art in the Digital Age
Saturday, April 8th, 10:30 - 4:00PM
Instructor: Carolyn Sweeney
In this intermediate class, letterpress guru Carolyn Sweeney will introduce you to photo-polymer plates, a new printing element that significantly expands design possibilities. Polymer plates translate a digital image/text file into a three-dimensional plate that can be used in the press much the same way that lead type is. You’ll select from Carolyn's existing collection of polymer plate images and phrases to create your own design. If you’d like, you can draw upon your previous typesetting experience to add a short name or phrase for personalization. Once done, you’ll begin production work on Carolyn’s 2500-pound, vintage press. (It has quite a history!) Result? A collection of 25 to 30 letterpress items – such as postcards, stationery, note cards, or business cards – that you've designed and printed yourself. You might even think about designing a small print suitable for framing or an insert for handmade books. The pre-requisite for this class is Carolyn’s class Letterpress – An Introduction, or else previous experience using a platen press. You need to have a basic understanding of how type is set and loaded into the chase before it is inserted in the press bed. The class is held at the instructor’s studio in North Boulder. The address will be emailed to registered students a few days before class. There is a short lunch break.
Please bring the following materials to class

Cancellations made up to 14 days prior to the first class meeting will be refunded or, at the participant's option, used to pay for another class. Two Hands Paperie will retain a $10 processing fee for EACH class cancelled by a participant. After 14 days, there is no refund or credit. In addition, the fee for a class cancelled within this 14-day timeframe by a participant cannot be transferred to pay for another class. These policies are to ensure that teachers are compensated for their investment in materials and in time spent preparing for the class. We reserve the right to cancel a class if fewer than 3 students enroll 48 hours prior to the scheduled class time. If for any reason Two Hands Paperie cancels a class, students will be called at the phone number on file and refunded the FULL class fee.
