Little Houses All in a Row
Saturday, September 21st, 10:30-4:30pm
Instructor: Jone Hallmark
Houses can be made of anything, and in this magical little village they are. They’re all part of the tiny world of Santa Fe artist Jone Hallmark. She loves to make houses and knows about a gazillion ways to do it. Learn four of her methods for building them in this class, plus how to add touches of whimsy with paint, rubber stamps, decorative papers, and small items crafted from commonplace items. The smallest house, which sits atop a round box, is formed from paper clay; you’ll paint both the house and box with teeny details. The largest house looks like a tree with a thick trunk sporting painted windows and doors; happy flowers and magical mushrooms ring the base. The roof is a cone of painted leaves, with perhaps a bird or two peeking from behind. The in-between houses are just as fun but quicker to build. One is decoupaged with old book pages and has a heart weathervane. The other is made of folded paper printed with Jone’s designs, which you can color in with pens, pencils, and watercolors if you’d like. We think Master Builder is the perfect title for Jone! At the very least, she’s a magician.

Instructor BioSanta Fe artist Jone Hallmark, who says of herself, “I tend to work in a two-inch square!”, has created her own little world of magical delights. Each tiny wonder – from the cleverest fox or hedgehog to a charming parade of flower-bearing young girls – is handcrafted from paper clay, wire, wood, and other tiny bits and pieces. Her sophisticated yet simple designs show the influence of both her father’s Scandinavian heritage and the intricate painted miniatures she collected when living in Switzerland. Her affinity for using small, ordinary objects comes from her mom, also a graphic designer and artist. She taught Jone that you can make just about anything you want instead of going to a store to buy it. Jone’s creative life started on the floor of her father’s studio, where she sat as a child surrounded by brushes, paints, and a treasure of paper.
Her passion for design eventually led to work developing store displays, award-winning lines of decorated papers, and the beloved Bryce and Madeline stickers. One day, after twenty years of licensing her artwork for other people’s products, Jone realized that she needed to get back to basics and simplify. In that moment, her tiny little world was born. Now she spends her time teaching, drawing, painting, and making huge messes on every available flat surface. See her work on Instagram at @jonehallmark. She hopes you enjoy her tiny world.
