Product Description

Paper Botanicals – Nasturtium Vine
Saturday, November 16th, 10:30-4:30pm
Instructor: Stephanie Redlinger
Nasturtiums have captivated gardeners, artists, and culinary adventurers alike for centuries. Gardeners delight in the effortless growing habit of the easy-to-grow vine. Artists value the bold, yet elegant, shapes and colors of nasturtiums Chefs and cooks use all parts of this deliciously edible plant to add a peppery punch to fresh dishes. In this class you’ll create several paper blooms and leaves, then fashion them into a complete vine that, while decidedly non-edible, is a feast for the eyes. Botanical artist Stephanie Redlinger will teach you how to capture the beauty of this outstanding garden workhorse using the simplest of materials: paper, glue, and wire. She’ll review the parts of the plants and the flowers to enable you to mimic the nasturtium’s growing habits to best effect. This step makes all the difference in the naturalness of your finished vine. Besides learning the basics of working with various types of crepe papers, you’ll also use several techniques for cutting, shaping, and coloring the paper to create realistic leaves and flowers. Stephanie provides templates for the various parts of the nasturtium, which can be re-used at home to create more flowers. We love how she used a short piece of vine draped on a framed black and white family photo for a bright, nostalgic touch!

Please bring the following optional materials to class:

  • favorite pair of sharp scissors for both large and fine cutting
  • apron
  • lunch and water bottle- there is a short break

Instructor Bio
Stephanie Redlinger has been an artist for as long as she can remember, but her very first paper flowers were her wedding bouquet and her husband's boutonniere for their small City Hall wedding in San Francisco. She didn’t “dive into the deep end” of paper flowers, though, until after a 2017 workshop with botanical artist Tiffanie Turner. Following that class she was all in. She now focuses on botanical art, working primarily with paper but adding in other media here and there as needed. Stephanie does copious amounts of research on her subjects both before and during the making process. She prefers studying live plants and flowers but also searches for images online and combs through books and magazines. Discover more of her work on Instagram @theflorasmith.

While working on her degree in Studio Art and Graphic Design, she became interested in the intersection where Fine Art, Graphic Art, and Craft meet. The interplay between the three continues to inspire both her art and her personal interests. A deep appreciation of the botanical world is now part of the mix. When not making paper plants and flowers, Stephanie can be found working outside in her Boulder garden, joining her husband in chasing their two young kids and dog around the house, or reading a good SciFi book.
