Pets and Friends – Quick Portraits
Saturday, September 7th, 2-5:30pm
Instructor: Mia Semingson
There’s something special about the way hand drawn portraits capture the personality of a pet or a friend. Perhaps it’s because the artist can’t help putting a bit of themselves into it. Drawing a portrait might sound daunting, but Mia Semingson, co-owner of Two Hands Paperie and Make My Notebook, teaches a simple technique that’s made to order for novices. (We’d like to give a shout out to California artist Courtney Cerruti for perfecting the portrait technique and teaching it to us.) For students who are more experienced, the technique is a useful addition to your tool kit. After all, Andy Warhol used it! The tools are simple: a pointed pen, acrylic ink, watercolors, and paper. The process itself is equally simple – almost like tracing, but not quite. Bring in photos of your pet or friend and join in the fun with Mia. We bet lots of amusing tales about shared misadventures will be told around the table. There’s a bonus to the class besides the humorous stories; once you learn the basic technique it can be used in all sorts of ways. You’ll leave class with a few portraits, each featuring a simple frame. You’ll also leave with tools and materials so that you can continue experimenting. Note that Mia will bring some photos for you to experiment with in class.
- Apron- Ink can be messy!
- Favorite pet or human photos, no larger than 8x10 inches. Though you won’t be drawing on the photos, you might want to bring photocopies as a precaution. Use the "mirror image" function on the copy machine to make image reversed for using with the technique.
Cancellations made up to 14 days prior to the first class meeting will be refunded or, at the participant's option, used to pay for another class. Two Hands Paperie will retain a $10 processing fee for EACH class cancelled by a participant. After 14 days, there is no refund or credit. In addition, the fee for a class cancelled within this 14-day timeframe by a participant cannot be transferred to pay for another class. These policies are to ensure that teachers are compensated for their investment in materials and in time spent preparing for the class. We reserve the right to cancel a class if fewer than 3 students enroll 48 hours prior to the scheduled class time. If for any reason Two Hands Paperie cancels a class, students will be called at the phone number on file and refunded the FULL class fee.
