Product Description

Stab Binding – Geometric Variations NEW! Class
January 27, Saturday, 10:30-5pm.

Instructor: Kristen Lewis
We’re delighted to offer more variations on the popular Japanese Stab Binding class previously held at the store. Book artist Kristen Lewis has developed new patterns that are based on the beauty of geometric design. As with other stab bindings, the patterns are easy, they look elegant, and they’re useful for binding together diverse types and weights of loose papers. (Finally – something to do with all those mismatched papers too special to discard!) Kristen has created sewing templates and instructions for each pattern as an aid for you to use in learning the stitches. After practicing all four variations in class, you’ll create a journal by decorating hard covers with colorful papers and selecting your favorite stitch to use for the binding. You’ll leave class not only with a new journal, but also with a collection of patterns you can use to complement the content or the cover paper of future books. How nice to have a personal repertoire at your fingertips!

All materials are supplied.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations made up to 14 days prior to the first class meeting will be refunded or, at the participant's option, used to pay for another class. Two Hands Paperie will retain a $10 processing fee for EACH class cancelled by a participant. After 14 days, there is no refund or credit. In addition, the fee for a class cancelled within this 14-day timeframe by a participant cannot be transferred to pay for another class. These policies are to ensure that teachers are compensated for their investment in materials and in time spent preparing for the class. We reserve the right to cancel a class if fewer than 3 students enroll 48 hours prior to the scheduled class time. If for any reason Two Hands Paperie cancels a class, students will be called at the phone number on file and refunded the FULL class fee.

Instructor Bio
Kristen Law Lewis was bitten hard by the book bug during the last semester of her undergrad studies in Studio Art at CU Boulder. She's made all kinds of books since, and even created a line of hand bound books that she sold in galleries throughout Colorado under the name Papercuts Press. She later pursued artifact conservation, a second love, and earned a degree in Museum Studies. Kristen mixes her time between sculpture, bookmaking, and caring for museum collections. Her artwork - which reveals her deep love for paper, books, and maps - originates in her study of nature, and melds scientific and spiritual habits like collecting. These days she finds herself teaching others the art of bookmaking and loving every minute of it! One of her favorite things about book making is that the definition of "book" is so broad. Can you imagine using a paperwasp nest in a book? Kristen could. Using a rainbow of threads, she carefully stitched the nest to form the cover of a book for the 2011 Eccentric Artists Garden Exhibit in Boulder. She's constantly experimenting. Her latest work is with sewable electronics, which can add light to almost any piece of art. To quote her, "Book making is the perfect combination of craft and technology".
