Watercolors and Flowers NEW! Class
Saturday, April 28, 10:30-4:00 pm
Instructor: Caron Dunn
Watercolors are a wonderfully portable and easy-to-use medium. Teaching how to work with them is a favorite of California-based artist Caron Dunn. They can be full of surprises, and she loves watching people discover the magic of the medium for themselves! This beginning class focuses on experiencing that magic with flowers. To start, you’ll learn how to make simple sketches of botanicals, with an emphasis on looking at shape and form. (We’re not going for anything scientific here, but just something that’s a cross between impressionistic and representational.) Once you learn to recognize the basic shapes it’s surprising how many different flowers you can create. Caron will demo several techniques for painting natural looking flowers, then give you a chance to get comfortable with the watercolors by experimenting on your own. A bit of subtle magic happens as you build up depth with layering, which is brushing wet watercolors over dried areas. In the afternoon you’ll practice your new skills on a prepared sheet of watercolor paper with illustrations of different flowers done by Caron. There’s lots of hands on time because, in her experience, most creatives learn best by doing. You’ll leave class with some new skills, a brush, a small palette of artist grade paint, plus your practice sheets for future reference.
All materials are supplied.
Cancellations made up to 14 days prior to the first class meeting will be refunded or, at the participant's option, used to pay for another class. Two Hands Paperie will retain a $10 processing fee for EACH class cancelled by a participant. After 14 days, there is no refund or credit. In addition, the fee for a class cancelled within this 14-day timeframe by a participant cannot be transferred to pay for another class. These policies are to ensure that teachers are compensated for their investment in materials and in time spent preparing for the class. We reserve the right to cancel a class if fewer than 3 students enroll 48 hours prior to the scheduled class time. If for any reason Two Hands Paperie cancels a class, students will be called at the phone number on file and refunded the FULL class fee.
Caron Dunn is always busily working away in her California studio, which she laughingly calls "The Little Factory of One". As she waits for glue or paint to dry on one project she moves around to the next one in no particular order, happily making away. She's primarily an illustrator, watercolorist, and fiber artist, but is fascinated by any new media or technique. Caron is a firm believer in the power of art in all forms to change and deepen the way we perceive the world and our place in it. She shares her passion for art through teaching, a practice that challenges her and is immensely rewarding. In watercolor classes, for example, she enjoys seeing people feel the magic for themselves when they get a chance to work hands on with the best quality materials. "I just totally love it when people go 'WOW!' the way that they do when color moves them - as it's supposed to." Art is the hub of her world. All she wants to do, apart from adore her kids, is to draw, paint, sculpt, design stuff, make stuff, figure out how to make more stuff, and make that stuff too. Caron studied fine art and art history in England, Canada, and the U.S. She's been painting with watercolor for more than twenty years as an illustrator for children's products and advertising. Caron has designed dolls for Magic Cabin, on online company that sells natural children's toys. She's also hand painted pens for Penopoly, which specializes in unique, high end fountain pens. Caron currently works as a designer for Catstudio in Petaluma, California, and teaches classes at Castle in the Air in Berkeley. She's an occasional blogger at carondunn.blogspot.com and @caronzuzu
