Artzine - Ready, Set, Draw! NEW! In-Store Class
Sunday, October 9, 11:30am-2:30pm MT
Instructor: Lexis Krieg
Limit: 7 students

There’s never enough time, is there, to get everything done and make art. Like many creatives, Denver artist Lexis Krieg wants to make the most of the free moments that open up during the day. Her solution? A little “Artzine” that she created at the last minute for a weekend trip. She knew she had to think simple if she hoped to create while on vacation.

Rescuing a large watercolor test sheet from her studio, Lexis folded and cut the single sheet of paper into a little journal. She clipped 3 pens – a black pen and 2 coordinating colors – to the front and was set to draw on the go. The Artzine turned out to be an inspired idea! Her little book wasn’t as formal as a regular journal, so she found it easy to be free and play with ideas. Both the process and limited materials made her look forward to finding moments to draw, even when it felt like there wasn’t enough time or space.

Join Lexis in the store to make an Artzine like hers. You’ll also learn what rules she set for herself to keep the art quick, easy, and on demand. Lexis has prepared a worksheet of marks and patterns for you to copy, or create your own. We’ll supply the paper and a black pen. Use your Artzine for art on the go, as a simple travel journal, or as a way to capture inspiration.

COVID SAFETY
Masks are required for all students and instructors
(covering nose and mouth). Students will be provided their own set of tools, sanitized between every class session. Due to the size of our class space we are unable to practice social distancing in the classroom.
Staff will also be wearing masks. The requirements for store customers will follow Boulder County mask mandates.

Class Materials

Please bring the following materials:

  • Favorite drawing/writing tool in two colors. Some work better over watercolor than others. Suggestions: Gelly Roll, Posca Paint pens, or colored pencils. The pencils can be standard or watercolor pencils. We’ll supply a black pen
  • Optional: There are watercolors and brushes available for you to use in class, but bring in your own if you’d like to work with familiar materials. Lexis suggests a set with fewer than 10 colors. Results are better with at least student grade paints. Some basic sets that work are Ooly Lil Pods ($), Prang Oval Watercolor Set ($), Cotman Water Colour Sketcher's Pocket Box ($$), Koi Watercolor Pocket Field Sketch Travel Kit ($$), and Prima Watercolor Confections sets ($$).
  • Optional: Favorite watercolor brush
  • Optional: Small spray bottle of water for wetting your watercolors
  • Optional: color and pattern inspiration in the form of magazines, books, cards, textiles, etc.

    Class Materials Include:

    • Template/instruction handout + doodle inspiration sheet
    • Watercolor paper + practice sheets
    • Watercolor paint sets + brushes for use in class
    • Water, containers, paper towels, scissors, etc for use in class
    • Foudenouske Black Pen to use and keep

    Class Refund/Cancellation Policy

Cancellations made up to 14 days prior to the first class meeting will be refunded or, at the participant's option, used to pay for another class. Two Hands Paperie will retain a $10 processing fee for EACH class cancelled by a participant. After 14 days, there is no refund or credit. In addition, the fee for a class cancelled within this 14-day timeframe by a participant cannot be transferred to pay for another class. These policies are to ensure that teachers are compensated for their investment in materials and in time spent preparing for the class. We reserve the right to cancel a class if fewer than 3 students enroll 48 hours prior to the scheduled class time. If for any reason Two Hands Paperie cancels a class, students will be called at the phone number on file and refunded the FULL class fee.

    Instructor Bio

Lexis Krieg is the artist, illustrator, and designer behind Lexisworks, a business she started in 2008 as an outlet for her personal creativity. She can’t remember a time when she wasn’t making something. She took every art class in high school, then left to study art at Minnesota State University Moorhead. While there Lexis fell in love with graphic design and, as she explains, decided to leave the “real art" to “artists.” She worked as a graphic designer for a while but, after being laid off twice, she ended up growing her freelance business to satisfy her creativity and her urge to create with her own hands.

Her background in graphic design shines through the art she creates now: custom murals, surface patterns, illustrations, hand lettering, and mixed media paintings. No surprise that her studio is stuffed with vintage papers, tubes of paint, containers full of brushes and pens, old sketchbooks, glue, and a collection of materials for her daughters to create with. She’s decided she is an artist after all, and enjoys teaching workshops as a way to help others discover their own creative talents.

When people ask Lexis where she’s from she takes a deep breath and recites: “Alaska, Oregon, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, and now Colorado.” (Somewhere in there she managed to live in England for a while.) Colorful Colorado became her home almost 15 years ago, and she’s been inspired by the Rocky Mountains ever since. Lexis takes any opportunity she can to get out and explore the Colorado landscape with her husband Bear, their two daughters, and their dog, Jackson.
