During the holidays local artist Annie Reiser creates colorful displays throughout her house with all shapes and sizes of these magical red mushrooms spotted with white. Ubiquitous in children’s fairy tales and associated with gnomes and other imaginary creatures, the mushrooms are called Amanita muscaria and do in fact exist. They’re one of the oldest hallucinogens known to humans, hence their association with magic, and are used in cultures around the world. Annie’s fanciful mushrooms are needle felted from sheep’s wool roving in red and white but can easily be varied in size and color if you want to make more.
Your finished mushrooms can be added to arrangements of pinecones and greens for a spot of color, piled into a rustic basket, gifted as party favors, or made into ornaments with a loop of gold thread. For a particularly striking display, “plant” them in a bed of moss on a wooden base and cover them with a glass cloche. They may not be magical, but they certainly are charming!
This online class will be recorded and made available to class participants for 10 days after the class.
