Intro to Bookbinding - Basic Codex In-Store Class
Two Mondays: March 6 & 13, 5:30-9pm
Instructor: Mia Semingson
Limit: 6 students

Class Details

This introductory, two-session class focuses on classic bookbinding techniques and is a class where you learn by doing. You’ll make a traditional book entirely from start to finish, plus learn how to resize it so you can later make more to your exact specifications.

Mia Semingson, co-owner of Two Hands Paperie, is an experienced bookbinder and enjoys sharing her knowledge. She begins class with basic information on the parts of a book, the materials required, paper choice, and the importance of paper grain. Then the work begins! You’ll tear down large sheets of paper for pages, group and sew the pages into signatures, and bind the signatures into a text block. Mia teaches how to add decorative headbands and tip-on endpapers, and how to surface pieces of board with book cloth and decorative paper for the cover. The last step? Assembling all the parts together.

Step back and admire your handiwork. You’ve just made a basic codex! There are no guarantees in life, but we’re pretty sure you’ll be proud of your finished book.

In addition, the fee for a class cancelled within this 14-day timeframe by a participant cannot be transferred to pay for another class.
