Class Details

Paper cutting is an ancient and popular folk art that’s practiced around the world. A pair of scissors, some paper, and a steady hand are all that’s required. The designs range from simple to complex and from delicate to flamboyantly bold.

Somewhere in between are the small creations of Santa Fe artist Jone Hallmark. They’re charming, and harken back to a slower-paced time when decorations were made by hand at home. We particularly like her paper cuts that use old book pages. The simpler ones require only a single fold. For the more creative ones, Jone shows how to cut patterns that connect through multiple layers of paper folded in different shapes. They’re a great exercise in working with and getting comfortable with negative space. Jone gets you started with her printed patterns. Once you get into the rhythm of cutting, though, it’s easy to create your own designs. Go for it!

Your paper cuts can be used in so many different ways. Create a special piece of art by arranging and framing a series of them. Or, glue them to packages, cards, envelopes, boxes, bags, book covers, collages – almost anything!

This online class will be recorded and made available to class participants for 10 days after the class.

Class Materials

Please bring the following materials:

  • Scissors – regular as well as ones for fine cutting
  • Favorite drawing pencil and eraser
  • Pencil sharpener to keep points sharp while working
  • Optional: colored pencils if you’d like to tint your paper cuts. Jone likes watercolor pencils instead of standard colored pencils; the soft lead blends well and produces a much richer color with layering.

Class Kit Includes:

  • Small booklet with instructions and pattern designs
  • Printed patterns and templates
  • Inspiration photos
  • Paper for cutting including vintage book pages
  • Glue stick

Instructor Bio

Santa Fe artist Jone Hallmark, who says of herself, “I tend to work in a two-inch square!”, has created her own little world of magical delights. Each tiny wonder – from the cleverest fox or hedgehog to a charming parade of flower-bearing young girls – is handcrafted from paper clay, wire, wood, and other tiny bits and pieces. Her sophisticated yet simple designs show the influence of both her father’s Scandinavian heritage and the intricate painted miniatures she collected when living in Switzerland. Her affinity for using small, ordinary objects comes from her mom, also a graphic designer and artist. She taught Jone that you can make just about anything you want instead of going to a store to buy it. Jone’s creative life started on the floor of her father’s studio, where she sat as a child surrounded by brushes, paints, and a treasure of paper. Her passion for design eventually led to work developing store displays, award-winning lines of decorated papers, and the beloved Bryce and Madeline stickers. One day, after twenty years of licensing her artwork for other people’s products, Jone realized that she needed to get back to basics and simplify. In that moment, her tiny little world was born. Now she spends her time teaching, drawing, painting, and making huge messes on every available flat surface. Visit Jone's Instagram: @jonehallmark
