Local book artist Kristen Lewis has put a holiday twist on her popular “Exploding” Books class. The three little books “explode” into a series of square and triangular patterns when you open them, packing an unexpected punch. Using holiday and other festive papers, it’s easy to turn them into little ornaments. Personalize them by adding photos, other images, or holiday greetings. The ornaments are delightful little surprises!
The techniques for the three books are similar and build on themselves. How nice when one technique leads to such diverse and impressive results. Kristen starts out with the basic explosion fold for the first book and then works with you in tandem to create the squash book and the star book.
As you play with the geometry of paper, follow her lead and enjoy the relaxing, meditative exercise of folding the pre-cut papers for your books. You’ll leave class with an arsenal of new skills in your creative toolbox plus information to inspire other projects. Use those skills to turn your stash of small papers into more ornaments, mini scrapbooks, little albums, cards – almost anything!
This online class will be recorded and made available to class participants for 10 days after the class.

Kristen Law Lewis was bitten by the book-bug in the last semester of her undergrad Studio Art studies at University of Colorado. She’s made all kinds of books since - founding Papercuts Press in 2005. She later pursued artifact conservation, a second love, and earned a degree in Museum Studies. Kristen mixes her time between sculpture, bookmaking, teaching, and caring for museum collections. She has taught bookbinding classes since 2007 and brings a gentle, engaging, and informative approach to guiding class projects.
"My work is largely driven by materials and process. I love the challenge of physically incorporating something special into what I make. Upcycling, repurposing, and reducing waste are key interests in my studio practice. I think a lot about where things come from, and where they are going. I'm enamored with material objects - modifying their past significance to construct a relevance for them today."
