Acorn Box NEW! In-Store Class
Sunday, October 2, 11:30am-4:30pm
Instructor: Caron Dunn
Limit: 6 students

Class Details:

We love surprises, and this charming acorn with a leaf curling around it is a delightful one! Caron Dunn, a California-based artist who calls herself the “Little Factory of One”, has used German crepe paper and a bit of glue to transform a round, papier mache box into an acorn. Opening it reveals a coppery compartment that’s perfect for hiding a small gift or special memento. Caron shows you how to prepare the little box and mold the bottom into a point like acorn. She also has a clever trick for creating the nubby cap.  While shaping the ball-shaped box, you’ll learn useful techniques that can carry over to other projects.

Caron’s class is a great introduction to working with German Crepe paper. It’s much stronger than the ordinary type of crepe paper, and can be twisted, curled, colored, wet, wrung out, and generally manipulated in ways not possible with the common kind of crepe. Learn what can be done as you make a charming acorn of your own! Your finished box is almost five inches long.

    Instructor Bio

Caron Dunn is always busily working away in her California studio, which she laughingly calls “The Little Factory of One”. While waiting for glue or paint to dry on one project she moves around to the next one in no particular order, happily making away. She’s primarily an illustrator, watercolorist, and fiber artist, but is fascinated by any new media or technique. Caron’s a firm believer in the power of art in all forms to change and deepen the way we perceive the world and our place in it. She shares her passion for art through teaching, a practice that challenges her and that she finds immensely rewarding. Art is the hub of her world. All she wants to do is to draw, paint, sculpt, design stuff, make stuff, figure out how to make more stuff, and make that stuff too.

Caron studied fine art and art history in England, Canada, and the U.S. She’s been painting with watercolor for more than twenty years as an illustrator for children's products and advertising. She’s also needle felted an astounding variety of small wonders, designed Waldorf dolls, hand painted custom fountain pens for Penopoly, made marionettes, built small wooden gift boxes, embraced copper embossing, and fashioned unique shadowboxes. She enjoys transforming cast off furniture with paper and paint, and makes fairy furniture from twigs and such. A master of many trades, Caron currently works as a designer for Catstudio in California and teaches as many classes as she can fit in. See some of her work on Instagram @caronzuzu.
