Class Details:

This charming little book features the long stitch, a traditional binding that dates back to medieval times. It’s characterized by pages that are attached directly to the book’s spine by stitching through the cover. The binding is simple to master and readily lends itself to experimentation and creative decorating. Plus, writing and sketching in the book is easy because the pages lay flat when the book is opened.

Local book artist Kristen Lewis has worked up this striking lightning bolt pattern to introduce you to a new category of the versatile long stitch. The lightning bolt pattern crosses signatures, which is an important technique that can be used to create complex patterns on the spine. Kristen has examples to show you that are impressive!

To start, you’ll create the casing (front, back, and spine) for your book and decorate it with handmade paper from Nepal. The next step is gathering the book’s pages into two groupings (called signatures) and punching holes with a jig in the cover. Kristen provides a detailed instruction sheet for sewing the lightning design, which goes quickly. Once you’ve got the hang of it, you’ve got a strong foundation for sewing more complex patterns and creating your own variations. With that and Kristen’s inspiring examples of other long stitch patterns, where you go from there is up to you! No prior bookbinding experience is required.

The homework for the class takes about an hour. This is an estimate. Please allow yourself plenty of time since everyone’s pace is different.

This online class will be recorded and made available to class participants for 10 days after the class.

Instructor Bio

Kristen Law Lewis was bitten by the book-bug in the last semester of her undergrad Studio Art studies at University of Colorado. She’s made all kinds of books since - founding Papercuts Press in 2005. She later pursued artifact conservation, a second love, and earned a degree in Museum Studies. Kristen mixes her time between sculpture, bookmaking, teaching, and caring for museum collections. She has taught bookbinding classes since 2007 and brings a gentle, engaging, and informative approach to guiding class projects.

"My work is largely driven by materials and process. I love the challenge of physically incorporating something special into what I make. Upcycling, repurposing, and reducing waste are key interests in my studio practice. I think a lot about where things come from, and where they are going. I'm enamored with material objects - modifying their past significance to construct a relevance for them today."
