A Learning Journal In-Store Class Feb 22 & Mar 1
A Learning Journal In-Store Class
Two sessions: Wednesdays, Feb 22 & Mar 1, 5-8pm
Instructor: Alix Christian
Limit: 7 students
Class Details:
Most of us have lovely journals at home that sit empty because they seem too beautiful to work in. This little book from local artist Alix Christian, which she calls her learning journal, is deliberately made for experimenting and getting messy. It’s perfect for trying out new ideas and taking lots of risks. Alix teaches you how to make your own in this two-session class.
The first session focuses on creating the journal. Start by grouping pages into signatures and then sewing them together with waxed linen thread and strips of colored fabric. Because the journal is coverless, the binding goes quickly. During the work time, Alix gets everyone thinking about what it means to work experimentally. She’s got some interestingly crazy stuff from her own learning journals to show you! Christen your new journal by working in it before leaving the first session. Do anything, even the smallest thing, that gets you started on filling the pages during the week ahead.
The second session begins with some show and tell and a discussion of how the week went. The rest of the time is for filling more pages. Alix provides individual feedback and also demonstrates various ideas for the group. There are materials for everyone to share, but feel free to bring in your own supplies if you’d like to focus on something specific. One of the advantages of the learning journal is that it’s easy to make more journals and to vary the size and number of pages based on the paper you have on hand. Because the pages lay flat when the journal is open, it’s easy to work in. Experiment away!
At the end of class, congratulate yourself for trying new things – especially for embracing those “What happens if . . . ?” moments.
