The mighty oak – it’s considered sacred by many cultures and is a common symbol of strength and endurance. What a perfect image for the past year. Join Annie Reiser, a certified Zentangle® teacher and art instructor at the Denver Botanic Gardens, to create a small framable art piece celebrating the mighty oak. As a small child Annie was always drawn to the plentiful acorns in the neighborhood park across the street from her house. The promise of mighty oaks hidden within something so small fascinated her. She loved gathering acorns to make all sorts of crafty things and, as an adult, she still loves them. One of her favorite Botangle© designs features these admirable acorns. (A Botangle© is a botanical drawing made with Zentangle® patterns, of which there are literally thousands!)

Annie has selected patterns that are well suited for botangling and will teach you how to draw them at the beginning of class. Though the patterns look complicated, they’re easy to learn one step at a time. Copy her composition or create your own by choosing the patterns you particularly like to use and deciding where to place them. The magic of your design emerges as you shade the patterns and then enhance them by layering colors for a richer and deeper look. Though this class is aimed at those already familiar with the Zentangle® method of drawing, Annie always welcomes enthusiastic new students!

This online class will be recorded and made available to class participants for 10 days after the class.

Class Materials

Please bring the following materials:

  • Sketchbook for taking notes and practicing strokes. Scratch paper also works.
  • Pencil sharpener
  • Colored pencils in various colors, at least student grade. Annie uses the Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils. Below is a list of the specific colors she used for her Admirable Acorns, but feel free to choose your own. To compare Annie’s colors to what you might already have or to those of another brand, see the chart at Faber Castell Polychromos Interactive Colour Chart – Artnitso & Co. Note that a key component of the class is layering colors to see how they combine. The end result is a different, richer, and more nuanced color.
