Archival Photo Book – Japanese Stab Binding In-Store Class

Class Details:

This class with local bookbinder Kristen Lewis grew out of comments made by some fine art photographers who took a Japanese Stab Binding class with her. They loved both the elegance of the book and how easy it was to make, and asked if she would create something similar but specifically for photographs. (Typical books aren’t suitable for albums since the added thickness of the mounted photos causes the pages to splay open.) This version of her popular book series on Japanese Stab Binding was her response. Photographs were the original inspiration, but it turns out that the structure also works well for layered collage and other purposes. 

Kristen’s album features metal eyelets for a nicely finished look on the stab binding. She’s also streamlined the whole process by developing an easier way to add spacers, which are the pieces that allow for extra bulk between the pages. In addition, the pages themselves are made of heavier paper that doesn’t “flop” when the book is opened. 

The result is a beautiful book that accommodates added materials, whether photographs, layers of collage, or other keepsakes. Think of the possibilities. A unique baby book, perhaps? Or a guest book at a special event? Take a polaroid photo of each arriving guest, paste it in the album, and let the guest write a personal greeting. What special memories! 

The album is sized to hold 4x6” photos with a caption underneath. You’ll leave class with a new book and with a second set of covers to make another one at home.

COVID SAFETY
Masks are optional and encouraged for all students and instructors. Students will be provided their own set of tools, which are sanitized between every class session. Due to the size of our class space we are unable to practice social distancing in the classroom. The requirements for store staff and customers will follow Boulder County mask and safety mandates. Class Materials

Please bring the following materials:

• Optional: apron to protect clothes from glue
• Optional: waterbottle and something to eat during the lunch break

Class Materials Include:

• Acid free heavyweight paper for pages
  
• Bookboard covers (+ another set to take home)
• Cover paper & decorative paper
• Eyelet (grommets for cover holes)
• Bookbinding thread or ribbon options
• Punching tools, bookbinding tools, needles, glue stick, etc to use in class
• Glue, brushes, containers etc to use in class

Class Refund/Cancellation Policy

Cancellations made up to 14 days prior to the first class meeting will be refunded or, at the participant's option, used to pay for another class. Two Hands Paperie will retain a $10 processing fee for EACH class cancelled by a participant. After 14 days, there is no refund or credit. In addition, the fee for a class cancelled within this 14-day timeframe by a participant cannot be transferred to pay for another class. These policies are to ensure that teachers are compensated for their investment in materials and in time spent preparing for the class. We reserve the right to cancel a class if fewer than 3 students enroll 48 hours prior to the scheduled class time. If for any reason Two Hands Paperie cancels a class, students will be called at the phone number on file and refunded the FULL class fee.

Instructor Bio

Kristen Law Lewis was bitten by the book-bug in the last semester of her undergrad Studio Art studies at University of Colorado. She’s made all kinds of books since - founding Papercuts Press in 2005. She later pursued artifact conservation, a second love, and earned a degree in Museum Studies. Kristen mixes her time between sculpture, bookmaking, teaching, and caring for museum collections. She has taught bookbinding classes since 2007 and brings a gentle, engaging, and informative approach to guiding class projects.

"My work is largely driven by materials and process. I love the challenge of physically incorporating something special into what I make. Upcycling, repurposing, and reducing waste are key interests in my studio practice. I think a lot about where things come from, and where they are going. I'm enamored with material objects - modifying their past significance to construct a relevance for them today."
