There’s a new bird in town, and he’s announcing from atop his little box that he’s glad to be here! This folk art blackbird is one of the new creations from Santa Fe artist Jone Hallmark, who has loved birds since forever. She’s made all kinds of them from all kinds of materials but, with his distinctive bright green and purple markings, this bird stands out. He’s made from wood pieces and a few toothpicks, which you’ll paint in a folk art style before gluing him together and perching him on a matching wood box that you’ve also decorated.

Painting the bright designs is easy peasey, even if you’ve never held a paint brush before. Jone provides a small booklet with instructions and designs for inspiration, and she’ll demonstrate how she creates them. If you’re a novice, copy her designs. If you’re more experienced, go ahead and invent new ones. Jone is always delighted when students interpret her patterns in new ways. She loves how ideas pop up when people spend time creating together; it’s one of the reasons she loves teaching. That, and coming up with little surprises for everyone!

By the end of class you’ll have a new, fine feathered friend and matching treasure box. Together they stand about 3-½” tall.

Join us in the store for Jone’s Pop-Up Shop September 14, Wednesday, 3-5pm!

This online class will be recorded and made available to class participants for 10 days after the class.

Instructor Bio

Santa Fe artist Jone Hallmark, who says of herself, “I tend to work in a two-inch square!”, has created her own little world of magical delights. Each tiny wonder – from the cleverest fox or hedgehog to a charming parade of flower-bearing young girls – is handcrafted from paper clay, wire, wood, and other tiny bits and pieces. Her sophisticated yet simple designs show the influence of both her father’s Scandinavian heritage and the intricate painted miniatures she collected when living in Switzerland. Her affinity for using small, ordinary objects comes from her mom, also a graphic designer and artist. She taught Jone that you can make just about anything you want instead of going to a store to buy it. Jone’s creative life started on the floor of her father’s studio, where she sat as a child surrounded by brushes, paints, and a treasure of paper.

Her passion for design eventually led to work developing store displays, award-winning lines of decorated papers, and the beloved Bryce and Madeline stickers. One day, after twenty years of licensing her artwork for other people’s products, Jone realized that she needed to get back to basics and simplify. In that moment, her tiny little world was born. Now she spends her time teaching, drawing, painting, and making huge messes on every available flat surface. See her work on Instagram at @jonehallmark.
