Friendship Box NEW! In-Store Class
Sunday, May 7, 11:30am-4:30pm
Instructor: Jone Hallmark
Limit: 7 students

Class Details:

These two little girls make a sweet tableau as they giggle and whisper secrets under the shade of a bright flower. It’s spring and time to play outside again! The children stand on a decorated wood box designed to hide a tiny treasure. Learn how to paint and put together this scene in a new class from Santa Fe artist Jone Hallmark. Her patterns remind us of Rosemåling, a decorative style of painting characterized by graceful curves and floral elements. There are always lots of flowers, hearts, and birds in Jone’s designs!

Painting with Jone is easy and fun, even if you’ve never held a paint brush before. She provides a small instructional booklet and demonstrates how a few basic strokes can be used to create tone on tone patterns and layer colors. In addition, Jone shows how to take a simple flower punched from paper and then transform it into something special with a few scissor cuts and tweaks. These small details make all the difference. Both the painting and flower techniques easily transfer to other projects.

By the end of class you’ll have put together a lovely tribute to friendship. It’s another charming addition to Jone’s wonderland of all things small. Come spend some time with her there!

    Instructor Bio

Santa Fe artist Jone Hallmark, who says of herself, “I tend to work in a two-inch square!”, has created her own little world of magical delights. Each tiny wonder – from the cleverest fox or hedgehog to a charming parade of flower-bearing young girls – is handcrafted from paper clay, wire, wood, and other tiny bits and pieces. Her sophisticated yet simple designs show the influence of both her father’s Scandinavian heritage and the intricate painted miniatures she collected when living in Switzerland. Her affinity for using small, ordinary objects comes from her mom, also a graphic designer and artist. She taught Jone that you can make just about anything you want instead of going to a store to buy it. Jone’s creative life started on the floor of her father’s studio, where she sat as a child surrounded by brushes, paints, and a treasure of paper. Her passion for design eventually led to work developing store displays, award-winning lines of decorated papers, and the beloved Bryce and Madeline stickers. One day, after twenty years of licensing her artwork for other people’s products, Jone realized that she needed to get back to basics and simplify. In that moment, her tiny little world was born. Now she spends her time teaching, drawing, painting, and making huge messes on every available flat surface. Visit Jone's Instagram: @jonehallmark
