Get a little funky with the alphabet! Local artist Alix Christian is delighted to take you on a creative journey into the world of hand lettering, her style. This class has been a perennial favorite in the store, and we’re glad she’s developed an online version. She starts the class by demonstrating a few design basics relevant to hand lettering: line variation, horizontal and vertical spacing, basic letter shapes, color, and the like. She then introduces some very unusual writing instruments. After that, there are no rules! The fun begins as you play with letters, words, and styles, mixing them all up. It’s time to get creative with writing! Just think what it can add to your journaling and artwork.
This online class will be recorded and made available to class participants for 10 days after the class.

Alix Christian has been a tumbling tumble weed, always looking for new art adventures along the way. She grew up in Minnesota, earned a BFA in Oregon, began a graphic design career in Dallas, moved to Santa Fe to become a real artist, stayed until her money ran out, and then moved on to Amarillo where she completed an MFA and became a professor of Fine Art and Computer Graphics. She took a short jaunt to Detroit during the worst of the economic downturn (an eye-opening experience) and then. . . and then . . . landed in Colorado, where she hopes to stay for a very long time. Though now settled down Alix continues adventuring in her art. She’s played with fire to create encaustic paintings, liberally used her graphic design experience and love of type for creative art journaling, developed a distinctive style of lettering, played with layering and color in collage pieces, created 3D art with wire and rusty bits, distilled her drawings into simple lines, thrown herself into watercolors, and now focuses on largescale water medium paintings. She delights in teaching it all to others. Students can always expect a lot of laughter and fun in her classes, along with some serious attention to technique. Alix’s work has been exhibited as far south as Texas and New Mexico, in the north from Minnesota to Michigan, and across the Atlantic in Assisi, Italy.
