Holidays! - DIY Letterpress Cards In-Studio Class
Saturday, November 4, 10:30am-4pm
Instructor: Carolyn Sweeney
Limit: 6 students. All participants must be 15 years or older.

Class Details:

Surprise the special people in your life by designing and printing your own holiday cards! Handmade cards are always special, but the crisp imprint created with letterpress printing has a unique character. Plus it’s easy to produce a stack of cards once you’ve finished setting your design by hand.

Printing guru Carolyn Sweeney loves teaching others how to work her two vintage presses. The first step is creating your own card design with metal type and decorative accents. There are 30 fonts and hundreds of printers’ ornaments from which to choose. Create a traditional design or try something with a little humor. (Hint: Carolyn has some great examples!) Use old-fashioned metal type to set your design by hand into a chase, which is the proper term for the form that holds everything together. Carolyn shows you how to ink and “makeready” the press for a clear impression. Then it’s production time as you put your prepared chase into the printer and crank it up!

You’ll leave class with a basic understanding of metal typesetting and letterpress printing. You’ll also have a stack of 25 to 30 unique, personalized cards – plenty for surprising all those people you don’t contact as often as you’d like. Spread some holiday cheer this season!

This introductory class is similar to Carolyn’s class on using metal type, except the focus is on making holiday cards.
