DIY Holiday Cards - Letterpress Workshop In-Studio Class
Saturday, November 5, 10:30am-4pm MT
Instructor: Carolyn Sweeney
Limit: 6 students

Surprise the special people in your life by designing and printing your own holiday cards! Handmade cards are always special, but the crisp imprint created with letterpress has a unique character. Plus it’s easy to produce a stack of cards once you’ve hand set your design. Printing guru Carolyn Sweeney loves teaching others how to work her two vintage presses. You’ll start by creating the design for your cards with metal type and decorative accents. There are 30 fonts and hundreds of printers’ ornaments from which to choose. Carolyn shows you how to set the old-fashioned metal type by hand and how to “makeready” the press for a clear impression. Then it’s production time.

You’ll leave class with a basic understanding of metal typesetting and letterpress printing as well as with a stack of 25 to 30 unique, personalized cards – plenty for surprising all those people you don’t contact as often as you’d like. (Note: this class is similar to Carolyn’s class Using Metal Type, but the focus here is on making cards.)

The class is held at the instructor’s studio near Chautauqua in Boulder. The address will be emailed to registered students on the Monday before class.

Masks are required for all students and instructors
(covering nose and mouth). Students will be provided their own set of tools, which are sanitized between every class session. Due to the size of our class space we are unable to practice social distancing in the classroom.
