Paper Weaving- Exciting Opportunities to Learn a New(ish) Craft
Over the holiday break I had a little down time to crack open Helen Hiebert's latest book Weaving with Paper, and let me tell you, I was inspired! Helen is a Colorado based paper artist who began a deep dive into the world of paper weaving in 2013 as a 100-Day Project with the commitment to making 100 paper weavings in 100 days. Helen says this about participating in the project:
The 100-Day Project gave me a focus to create something new daily, and it was rewarding in so many ways: It reignited a creative spark and allowed me to explore various papers, and, as someone who doesn't like doing repetitive tasks, this daily practice propelled me to push the boundaries of paper weaving because I was determined to do something different each day.
The completion of this project led to the creation of a yearly class she runs online called Weave Through Winter, bringing a dedicated group of people together to explore and experiment with paper weaving over an entire month. Weaving with Paper is a culmination of these personal and group explorations.
From Helen's book I learned that paper weaving is a relatively new(ish) artistic medium. There's a long history of cloth weaving, basket weaving, but paper, not so much. And there wasn't much consolidated information out there on the topic before Helen's book arrived on the scene. Helen has made this art form readily accessible to just about anyone with some basic cutting skills and materials at hand.
