Class Details

Dia de los Muertos is an annual, high-spirited Mexican holiday that literally explodes with color! It celebrates the annual return of the spirits of the departed, and is a time for food, drink, lively music, parties, and activities the spirits enjoyed in life. This little character from Santa Fe artist Jone Hallmark is dressed for the occasion. She’s Jone’s interpretation of La Catrina, an iconic symbol of the holiday. Her dress is covered in painted flowers composed of simple lines and dots, which are easy to learn even if you’ve never held a paint brush before. Just follow the examples in the small booklet Jone provides. Catrina’s smiling skull face is even easier. (Jone painted her, so of course she’s smiling!)

Catrina wouldn’t be Catrina without a wildly decorated hat, and Jone’s Catrina has a hat that is covered with miniature flowers. To make them, Jone cleverly combines bits and pieces of this and that, such as scraps of decorative paper, book pages, small millenary items, and deconstructed fake flowers that Jone’s repurposed. (Talk about making a silk purse from a sow’s ear!) She’s delighted to show you her tricks.

Part of the fun of working with Jone is absorbing her clever techniques and seeing the unusual tools she makes from commonplace objects. Plus, you never know what other whimsical touch she just might dream up during class!

This online class will be recorded and made available to class participants for 14 days after the class.

Instructor Bio

Santa Fe artist Jone Hallmark, who says of herself, “I tend to work in a two-inch square!”, has created her own little world of magical delights. Each tiny wonder – from the cleverest fox or hedgehog to a charming parade of flower-bearing young girls – is handcrafted from paper clay, wire, wood, and other tiny bits and pieces. Her sophisticated yet simple designs show the influence of both her father’s Scandinavian heritage and the intricate painted miniatures she collected when living in Switzerland. Her affinity for using small, ordinary objects comes from her mom, also a graphic designer and artist. She taught Jone that you can make just about anything you want instead of going to a store to buy it. Jone’s creative life started on the floor of her father’s studio, where she sat as a child surrounded by brushes, paints, and a treasure of paper.

Her passion for design eventually led to work developing store displays, award-winning lines of decorated papers, and the beloved Bryce and Madeline stickers. One day, after twenty years of licensing her artwork for other people’s products, Jone realized that she needed to get back to basics and simplify. In that moment, her tiny little world was born. Now she spends her time teaching, drawing, painting, and making huge messes on every available flat surface. See her work on Instagram at @jonehallmark.
