“Chonky”? It’s a playful variation on “chunky”, but with the added connotation of something endearing. “Chonky” is the perfect way to describe this new book from local artist Kristen Lewis – it’s heftier than average and totally endearing! It’s also a perfect introduction to multi-needle binding.
To provide an easy understanding of the multi-needle technique, Kristen guides you through binding using the 2-needle coptic stitch. Instead of wrestling with the four, six, or more needles necessary for more complex stitching, you’ll work with only two – a satisfying way to get acquainted with manipulating and switching between needles. For a simple but striking variation, use two different colors of waxed linen thread, highlighting the ‘braided’ look of your stitch.
Kristen thoughtfully focused on shape and scale when designing this project. Plump watercolor paper and more signatures accentuates the shape of the stitch and provides repeat opportunities to practice sewing! The chonky aesthetic is complete with rounded corners and an elastic enclosure strap to keep all your sketchbook marvelousness contained.
In short, the chonky watercolor sketchbook is unconventional – a rare bird among more common handbound books. You’ll leave class with a solid understanding of multi-needle binding, and with a beautiful book that’s a blank canvas for future creative explorations.
