Lettering with Brush Markers - Get Creative! NEW! In-Store Class
Friday, November 14, 1-4pm
Instructor: Renee Jorgensen
Limit: 6 students. All participants must be 15 years or older.
Class Details
Explore the versatile and creative world of brush markers in this introductory class with artist and calligrapher Renee Jorgensen. Renee uses brush markers, augmented by water brushes and gel pens, to create beautiful lettering and designs on cards, book plates, bookmarks, weather grams, journals – anything with a flat surface. She finds the markers to be a playful tool that encourages individual creativity.
The focused class exercises are designed to teach you how to control and smoothly create lines of varying thicknesses. (Hand position and brush angle are key.) Renee demonstrates letter shapes using modern, loose brush lettering styles, after which you’ll practice the strokes individually before combining them into letters and words. The simple letterforms used in the class makes it easy to experiment with your writing through creative word choices, different shapes, and color combinations (the fun stuff!). Throughout, Renee provides one-on-one support and personalized feedback on creative choices and the fine nuances of the techniques.
Renee has some favorite calligraphy techniques – such as mixing and layering colors, creating drop shadows, and strategically adding strokes of white – that she uses over and over again in her art, and she shares them with the class. She also uses water brushes in an unusual way to create what she calls “on demand” color mixing.
You’ll leave class with enhanced lettering and drawing skills, and a decorative message or drawing that you’ve personally created by applying these new techniques. Brilliant!
