Illuminated Letter - Using Metallic Paints NEW! In-Store Class
Saturday, March 22, 10:30-4:30pm
Instructor:
Renee Jorgensen
Limit: 6 students. All participants must be 15 years or older.

Class Details

Take part in the colorful and artistic revival of historical illuminated manuscripts, but with a modern twist. Renee Jorgensen, who’s an experienced calligrapher and illustrator, has designed both a medieval and a modern version of an illuminated letter as a way of teaching how to use metallic watercolors. What a great way to learn!

A large capital letter, which is encased in a decorative frame that’s rich with metallic gold accents, sits at the heart of each design. Renee demonstrates techniques for how to fill in the background around and behind the capital letter, and how to achieve a rich, saturated effect with the metallic paint. She also explains the differences between brands of paint as well as brands of fine tip markers, colored pencils, and watercolors, and describes the differences in their uses.

Practice a bit with the metallic paint and these various coloring tools on some heavyweight watercolor paper before working on one of the pre-printed line drawings that Renee has created specifically for the class. Your finished illuminated letter has a luminous, historical feel, and is suitable for framing. This class is a wonderful way of stepping back in time, but with modern tools that are easier to use.

An email will be sent to participants the Monday before the class. Classes with homework may receive pre-class info earlier.  No email? Instructor Bio

Renee Jorgensen is an artist and illustrator with degrees and certifications in commercial art, graphic design, and botanical illustration. She’s also certified as an American Cursive Handwriting instructor. In addition, Renee has studied various forms of calligraphy. She has a particular reverence for the art of Medieval Illumination, which inspired her to develop her own modern style of the traditional illuminated alphabet. It’s not surprising that she combines her love of nature and the written word in the classes she teaches throughout the wider Denver area! As an instructor on the staff of the Denver School of Botanical Art and Illustration in Denver, Colorado, she offers classes in illustration, modern illumination, and calligraphy. In 2017, she was one of eight instructors, each submitting individual entries in the group category for the annual botanical art show held in London by the Royal Horticultural Society. They received a Group Gold Medal Award.
