Class Details
It’s only a slight exaggeration to say that everything created by Santa Fe artist Jone Hallmark has her Scandinavian-inspired patterns on it. They’re charming, playful, and versatile. Learn how she makes them in this technique class. The designs are surprisingly easy – all that’s required are straight lines, curves, squiggles, and some dots here and there. The secret? Practicing the basic strokes and learning how to combine and add to them. The designs look particularly striking when drawn with white on kraft paper.
Jone does a quick demonstration and describes her techniques and tricks before you start working from the exercise sheets she’s created. The key, she says, is practicing until your hand knows what to do on its own. After that, it’s easy to combine and extend the simple patterns into something wonderful. A huge advantage of this class is that you see Jone “up close and personal” while she demonstrates how she works. The camera is literally right at her hands.
After the demos, it’s your turn; use your white paint or ink to draw on kraft paper. While you’re working, Jone shares lots of examples of things she’s done that you can readily make on your own after class. You’ll be creating a magic pattern sampler as you practice, practice, practice! The sampler serves as a valuable reference for future projects.
This online class will be recorded and made available to class participants for 14 days after the class.

Instructor Bio
Santa Fe artist Jone Hallmark, who says of herself, “I tend to work in a two-inch square!”, has created her own little world of magical delights. Each tiny wonder – from the cleverest fox or hedgehog to a charming parade of flower-bearing young girls – is handcrafted from paper clay, wire, wood, and other tiny bits and pieces. Her sophisticated yet simple designs show the influence of both her father’s Scandinavian heritage and the intricate painted miniatures she collected when living in Switzerland. Her affinity for using small, ordinary objects comes from her mom, also a graphic designer and artist. She taught Jone that you can make just about anything you want instead of going to a store to buy it. Jone’s creative life started on the floor of her father’s studio, where she sat as a child surrounded by brushes, paints, and a treasure of paper. Her passion for design eventually led to work developing store displays, award-winning lines of decorated papers, and the beloved Bryce and Madeline stickers. One day, after twenty years of licensing her artwork for other people’s products, Jone realized that she needed to get back to basics and simplify. In that moment, her tiny little world was born. Now she spends her time teaching, drawing, painting, and making huge messes on every available flat surface. Visit Jone's Instagram: @jonehallmark
