Class Details

Daphne Rabbit’s little triplets are hopping around the yard showing off their flowers. Each has her favorite! Lovingly crafted by Santa Fe artist Jone Hallmark, the triplets are a cute addition to her miniature little world of painted peg dolls. The bunnies are easy to make and fun to paint. Spend a few hours with Jone crafting a sweet set of triplets all your own.

The bunnies are made from small wooden peg dolls. Their dresses are painted in acrylic paint using simple lines and dots for decoration. The patterns are easy to learn, even if you’ve never held a brush before. Jone demonstrates how to create tone on tone patterns and layer colors for a richer look. Follow the designs that are in the little booklet she’s created specifically for the class, or enjoy making up your own. Then paint, paint, paint!

While the paint is drying, make the miniature flowers that the triplets hold. Jone has clever ways of crafting flowers from scraps of decorative paper, book pages, small millenary items, as well as fake flowers that she’s taken apart and repurposed. She’s delighted to show you her tricks. Each bunny has to have her own distinctive flower, of course!

Part of the fun of working with Jone is watching what whimsical touches she adds during class. You never know just what she might dream up!

This online class will be recorded and made available to class participants for 14 days after the class.

Class Materials

Please bring the following materials:

  • Jone uses Deco Art Americana, which comes in small plastic bottles, but other acrylic paints are fine. The brand Folk Art is comparable in price. Following is a list of the specific Deco Art Americana colors she used for this project. Feel free to substitute other colors.
    • Light Buttermilk (off white)
    • Golden Yellow (bright true yellow)
    • Honey Brown (golden brown)
    • Hauser Light Green (spring green)
    • Hauser Medium Green (basic green)
    •  Blue Harbor (bluebird blue)
    •  Santa Red (true red)
  • Scissors for fine cutting
  • Jar for water (paint brushes provided in the kit.)
  •  White craft glue (Jone prefers Alene's Tacky Glue because it sets up quickly and holds tightly)
  • Paper for practicing brush strokes and the designs. Good weight copy paper is fine.
  • Optional: Mod Podge to overlay your designs with a protective coat. Jone uses the matte finish.
  • Optional: apron

    Instructor Bio

Santa Fe artist Jone Hallmark, who says of herself, “I tend to work in a two-inch square!”, has created her own little world of magical delights. Each tiny wonder – from the cleverest fox or hedgehog to a charming parade of flower-bearing young girls – is handcrafted from paper clay, wire, wood, and other tiny bits and pieces. Her sophisticated yet simple designs show the influence of both her father’s Scandinavian heritage and the intricate painted miniatures she collected when living in Switzerland. Her affinity for using small, ordinary objects comes from her mom, also a graphic designer and artist. She taught Jone that you can make just about anything you want instead of going to a store to buy it. Jone’s creative life started on the floor of her father’s studio, where she sat as a child surrounded by brushes, paints, and a treasure of paper.

Her passion for design eventually led to work developing store displays, award-winning lines of decorated papers, and the beloved Bryce and Madeline stickers. One day, after twenty years of licensing her artwork for other people’s products, Jone realized that she needed to get back to basics and simplify. In that moment, her tiny little world was born. Now she spends her time teaching, drawing, painting, and making huge messes on every available flat surface. See her work on Instagram at @jonehallmark.
