Class Details

Jone Hallmark, who’s known for the tiny fairytale worlds she creates from wood and paper, also works her magic with needle and thread. This colorful bird pin is just one example. Making it is like “painting” a still life, but with small pieces of felt and a few embroidery stitches. To make your own, just follow along with Jone in class and refer as needed to the simple diagrams in her hand drawn booklet. She’s created several different birds for the class to show how versatile the basic template is. The secret to Jone’s colorful flock of birds? Layering the cut felt and combining simple stitches in fun ways. She loves seeing how everyone comes up with their own little twists as they work – inspiring!

Jone always adds a fun little touch to each of her projects. For this one, she decorated a square of heavy colored paper with her Scandinavian designs and then pinned the bird to it. Voila! A small present for someone special. Before creating a presentation card for your little bird, you’ll practice some simple pen patterns with Jone.

Everything you need for the bird and presentation card is in your kit. Opening it is like opening a wonderful little gift of joy. Join Jone and learn how to transform all the pieces into a happy little bird of your own. You’ll be all set to greet fall’s migrating flocks!

Note: So that class time can be devoted to stitching and assembling, there is some pre-work. You’ll receive the felt and templates in your kit; cut out the shapes before class. Since everyone’s pace is different, allow yourself plenty of time since there is no time for cutting shapes out in class.

This online class will be recorded and made available to class participants for 14 days after the class.

Instructor Bio

Santa Fe artist Jone Hallmark, who says of herself, “I tend to work in a two-inch square!”, has created her own little world of magical delights. Each tiny wonder – from the cleverest fox or hedgehog to a charming parade of flower-bearing young girls – is handcrafted from paper clay, wire, wood, and other tiny bits and pieces. Her sophisticated yet simple designs show the influence of both her father’s Scandinavian heritage and the intricate painted miniatures she collected when living in Switzerland. Her affinity for using small, ordinary objects comes from her mom, also a graphic designer and artist. She taught Jone that you can make just about anything you want instead of going to a store to buy it. Jone’s creative life started on the floor of her father’s studio, where she sat as a child surrounded by brushes, paints, and a treasure of paper.

Her passion for design eventually led to work developing store displays, award-winning lines of decorated papers, and the beloved Bryce and Madeline stickers. One day, after twenty years of licensing her artwork for other people’s products, Jone realized that she needed to get back to basics and simplify. In that moment, her tiny little world was born. Now she spends her time teaching, drawing, painting, and making huge messes on every available flat surface. See her work on Instagram at @jonehallmark.
