Class Details

Decorative borders have the power to transform something ordinary into something remarkable. In this technique class, Santa Fe artist Jone Hallmark shows you how it’s done. She spent many years designing colorful borders for the scrapbook industry, with ideas for patterns on cards, envelopes, stickers, picture frames, stationery, etc., swirling around in her head. Join her in this class to explore the endless possibilities for combining colors and patterns. A huge advantage is that you watch Jone up close and personal as she demonstrates how she paints. The camera is literally at her hands.

Start with simple lines and strokes, practicing to “get in the groove”. Add details step-by-step to extend the border and to visually balance it end to end. Jone demonstrates how the smallest brush stroke or dot can make quite a difference. While you work, you can play with combining the small elements in different ways to create your own special designs. Throughout the class Jone shares her tips and tricks. Armed with those and what you learned while painting, go out and paint borders everywhere. Go bigger! Hallways, doors, mirrors, cabinets. . . .you get the idea.

This online class will be recorded and made available to class participants for 14 days after the class.

Class Materials

Please bring the following materials:

  • Printed worksheets (you will receive a PDF for printing ahead of class). If possible, print in color.
  • A set of fine brushes for painting with acrylics. Jone recommends buying a set of model brushes, which can be found in the model making section of a craft store.
  • Acrylic paints. Jone uses Deco Art Americana, which comes in small plastic bottles, but other acrylic paints are fine. The Folk Art brand is comparable in price. Select 6 to 8 of your favorite colors for the class. If you want to work with Jone’s favorite colors, refer to the PDF included in your kit. But if you prefer working, for example, all in pinks and purples or fluorescent orange and green, go for it!
  • Water jars for painting
  • Paper towels
  • Scissors
  • Scratch paper
  • Pencil
  • White craft glue (Jone prefers Alene’s Tacky Glue because it sets up quickly and holds tightly)
  • Optional: blank cards, envelopes, tags – anything you’d like to work on.
  • Optional: apron

Instructor Bio

Santa Fe artist Jone Hallmark, who says of herself, “I tend to work in a two-inch square!”, has created her own little world of magical delights. Each tiny wonder – from the cleverest fox or hedgehog to a charming parade of flower-bearing young girls – is handcrafted from paper clay, wire, wood, and other tiny bits and pieces. Her sophisticated yet simple designs show the influence of both her father’s Scandinavian heritage and the intricate painted miniatures she collected when living in Switzerland. Her affinity for using small, ordinary objects comes from her mom, also a graphic designer and artist. She taught Jone that you can make just about anything you want instead of going to a store to buy it. Jone’s creative life started on the floor of her father’s studio, where she sat as a child surrounded by brushes, paints, and a treasure of paper. Her passion for design eventually led to work developing store displays, award-winning lines of decorated papers, and the beloved Bryce and Madeline stickers. One day, after twenty years of licensing her artwork for other people’s products, Jone realized that she needed to get back to basics and simplify. In that moment, her tiny little world was born. Now she spends her time teaching, drawing, painting, and making huge messes on every available flat surface. Visit Jone's Instagram: @jonehallmark
