Class Details
Surprise the special people in your life with a handmade valentine! Join printing guru Carolyn Sweeney to learn how to design and print your own cards using old-fashioned metal type. Handmade cards are always special, but the crisp imprint created with a letterpress has a unique character and feel. Plus it’s easy to produce a stack of cards once you’ve hand set your design.
Carolyn loves teaching others how to work her impressive, 2500 pound vintage presses. Start by creating the design for your cards with metal type and decorative accents. There are 30 fonts and hundreds of printers’ ornaments from which to choose – wow! Carolyn teaches you how to set the old-fashioned metal type by hand into a chase (i.e., form) and how to “makeready” the press for a clear impression. Then it’s production time as you put your chase into the printer and crank it up! Using the press is easier than you might think.
You’ll leave class with a basic understanding of metal typesetting and letterpress printing as well as with a stack of 25 to 30 unique, personalized cards – plenty for surprising all those people you don’t contact as often as you’d like. Spread a lot of love this Valentine’s Day!
Note that this introductory class is similar to Carolyn’s class on using metal type, except the focus is on making Valentine’s cards.
