Class Details
It seems like Santa Fe artist Jone Hallmark knows a thousand ways to paint and use flowers. They’re on practically everything she makes! Learn how to create your own in this step-by-step painting class with her. You’ll practice painting special little details and learn how to alter and combine the basic flowers into patterns and borders. The focus is on practicing and developing muscle memory. A huge advantage of this class is that you watch Jone “up close and personal” as she demonstrates how she paints. The camera is literally at her hands. The angle of the brush is important as well as how her hands move. There’s no substitute for closely watching an artist work right in front of you. What’s striking is how simple her method is.
For practice, Jone likes using brown paper bags cut into smaller sheets. They’re plentiful, not too precious to experiment on, and loosely simulate the feel of painting on wood – a perfect warm up for painting designs on characters, creatures, and trees in her future classes. Instead of copying her designs, you’ll be well equipped to spontaneously create your own.
This techniques-only class is useful for beginners and is delightful fun for those with some experience. There’s no final project to complete – just time dedicated to painting over and over to practice the technique and experiment with your own combinations. Jone provides a detailed instructional sheet as part of the class, which you’ll receive as a PDF via email for printing. Soon you’ll be creating a magical garden of your own!
This online class will be recorded and made available to class participants for 14 days after the class.

Instructor Bio
Santa Fe artist Jone Hallmark, who says of herself, “I tend to work in a two-inch square!”, has created her own little world of magical delights. Each tiny wonder – from the cleverest fox or hedgehog to a charming parade of flower-bearing young girls – is handcrafted from paper clay, wire, wood, and other tiny bits and pieces. Her sophisticated yet simple designs show the influence of both her father’s Scandinavian heritage and the intricate painted miniatures she collected when living in Switzerland. Her affinity for using small, ordinary objects comes from her mom, also a graphic designer and artist. She taught Jone that you can make just about anything you want instead of going to a store to buy it. Jone’s creative life started on the floor of her father’s studio, where she sat as a child surrounded by brushes, paints, and a treasure of paper. Her passion for design eventually led to work developing store displays, award-winning lines of decorated papers, and the beloved Bryce and Madeline stickers. One day, after twenty years of licensing her artwork for other people’s products, Jone realized that she needed to get back to basics and simplify. In that moment, her tiny little world was born. Now she spends her time teaching, drawing, painting, and making huge messes on every available flat surface. Visit Jone's Instagram: @jonehallmark
