Instructor:
 Kristen Lewis
Limit: 6 students. All participants must be 15 years or older.

Class Details

This popular class from local book artist Kristen Lewis is the Buttonhole Binding. It’s a non-adhesive binding with a thick board cover, exposed sewing, and a “window” on the spine. The name comes from the classic buttonhole embroidery stitch, which is the pattern used in the book’s binding to create a distinct, decorative edge. It’s easy to change the character of the book by changing the color of the waxed linen thread used for the binding or to add colored endpages as an accent.

The sewing pattern is straightforward but yields impressive results. The buttonhole binding is also one of the more versatile book structures to add to your tool box. Wait until you see some of the interesting variations! Kristen describes how you can easily change up the book as she teaches the basic structure. We were particularly taken with variations where the “window” on the spine is cut into different shapes or extended into the covers.

You’ll leave class with a completed book and inspiring ideas for the next one. No prior bookbinding experience is required.

An email will be sent to participants the Monday before the class. Classes with homework may receive pre-class info earlier.  No email? Instructor Bio

Kristen Law Lewis was bitten by the book-bug in the last semester of her undergrad Studio Art studies at University of Colorado. She’s made all kinds of books since - founding Papercuts Press in 2005. She later pursued artifact conservation, a second love, and earned a degree in Museum Studies. Kristen mixes her time between sculpture, bookmaking, teaching, and caring for museum collections. She has taught bookbinding classes since 2007 and brings a gentle, engaging, and informative approach to guiding class projects.

"My work is largely driven by materials and process. I love the challenge of physically incorporating something special into what I make. Upcycling, repurposing, and reducing waste are key interests in my studio practice. I think a lot about where things come from, and where they are going. I'm enamored with material objects - modifying their past significance to construct a relevance for them today."
