Exercises in Intuitive Creativity NEW! In-Store Class
Sunday, Nov 10, 1-4pm
Instructor: Cristina Rutter
Limit: 7 students. All participants must be 15 years or older.
Class Details
Local artist Cristina Rutter is the founder of a one-woman graphic design studio and an abstract intuitive painter. After years of creative work she had an epiphany – making art is not all about output. What’s more important is learning to be in that intuitive space where art making comes naturally. Training and technique matter, but the key is reconnecting with a fearless, childlike innocence. As an example, she describes her own painting process as a balance of wild abandon and practiced art principles.
Tap into that wild abandon yourself as Cristina helps everyone transcend self-imposed expectations in this introductory class. All it takes are a few simple materials, some carefully designed exercises, and, most importantly, a willingness to let go. The goal is to connect you to the right side of your brain so you can fully experience the creative mindset.
Cristina sets the stage for your creative journey by demonstrating different ways to use the materials. There’s no drawing per se. Instead, you’ll work through the exercises, playing with simple marks, color, and composition, then responding in the moment to what’s on the page. (See her video for an example.) Cristina coaches you individually to help you recognize your defaults and to push beyond them. Prepare to be surprised!
Cristina believes creativity has a place in everyone's life. This class helps make that place larger.

Instructor Bio
Cristina Rutter is an abstract, intuitive painter living and working near the foothills outside of Denver, Colorado, with her husband Bill and cat Gertie Bird. She earned a BA in Art & Design from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and is the founder of Sunny Day Design, an award-winning, one-woman graphic design studio. Throughout her life she’s pursued various art forms: dance, violin, bookmaking, photography, and writing.
In 2020 she discovered abstract intuitive painting, an art form that quickly turned her world upside down. To her surprise, she found out that learning to paint also uncovered a world of life lessons. What her paintings needed to move forward (Bold Decisions! Bravery!), her life also needed.
Cristina begins her paintings with a carefully considered color palette and adds mark making tools and techniques to the mix. Every move on the surface is something new to respond to with abandon. She often works wet-on-wet, scraping back, scrubbing, and applying paint directly with her hands to intuitively express her ideas and emotions. She believes that every painting has something to teach her – if she hasn’t learned anything yet, the painting isn’t finished!
Ripe is one of her recent collections. It contains juicy little paintings pulled from her imagination. They invite you to a secret island where hot magenta fruits, enveloped by gigantic green leaves and splashing ocean waves, burst into life.
