Japanese Stab Binding - Four Ways NEW! In-Store Class
Saturday, March 16, 10:30am-4pm
Instructor:
 Kristen Lewis
Limit: 6 students. All participants must be 15 years or older.

Class Details:

Japanese stab binding is a familiar favorite of bookbinders for good reason. First, it’s easy and can be used to bind together diverse types and weights of loose papers. (Finally – something to do with all those mismatched papers too special to discard!) Second, it’s one type of binding that’s suited to making a book after the content has been written or printed. Third, varying the stitching pattern and the number of holes in the cover results in countless designs, which range from the elegant to whimsical.

This class with local book artist Kristen Lewis focuses on four variations of the basic stab binding. To help you learn all four patterns, she’s created sewing templates and instructions for each. Practice all four variations in class, then select your favorite to use in binding your journal. Choose from a variety of decorated papers and colorful threads for the cover.

You’ll leave class not only with a new journal, but also with a collection of patterns to use in the future. How nice to have a personal repertoire at your fingertips!

    Instructor Bio

Kristen Law Lewis was bitten by the book-bug in the last semester of her undergrad Studio Art studies at University of Colorado. She’s made all kinds of books since - founding Papercuts Press in 2005. She later pursued artifact conservation, a second love, and earned a degree in Museum Studies. Kristen mixes her time between sculpture, bookmaking, teaching, and caring for museum collections. She has taught bookbinding classes since 2007 and brings a gentle, engaging, and informative approach to guiding class projects.

"My work is largely driven by materials and process. I love the challenge of physically incorporating something special into what I make. Upcycling, repurposing, and reducing waste are key interests in my studio practice. I think a lot about where things come from, and where they are going. I'm enamored with material objects - modifying their past significance to construct a relevance for them today."
