Sashiko Patch In-Store Class
Saturday, April 27, 1-4pm 
Instructor: Nanci Hill Feeney
Limit: 6 students. All participants must be 15 years or older.

Class Details:

Learn basic Sashiko stitching in this class with fiber artist Nanci Hill Feeney. At the same time, you’ll be creating decorative fabric patches. (How useful!) Sashiko literally means “little stabs”, and is a visible form of decorative stitching that began in the 1600s in Japan. Poor communities, particularly rural ones, lacked the means to buy new textiles, so they repaired clothes and other items with what was available: a needle, some thread, and scraps of fabric. Nanci is delighted to show you just how attractive and ornamental this Japanese art of combining simple stitches and bits of cloth can be.   

The class is designed to give you a solid foundation in Sashiko. Nanci introduces the specialized materials, then demonstrates the basic needle technique. You’ll swiftly discover that many different patterns can be made just with this basic stitch. Copy the provided patterns or use them to inspire your own. It’s easy to change up the look by playing with multiple colors of thread or combining parts of several patterns. There’s also a selection of fabrics (denim, canvas, and a linen/cotton blend) from which to choose. 

Not all patterns require transferring but, for the ones that do, Nanci demonstrates three different techniques. She also shows different methods for finishing the edges of patches. Perhaps the most important thing you’ll learn is how to attach them to a piece of clothing or other fabric item – a practical and fun way to show off your work.

Due to the limited size of the classroom, social distancing will not be possible. Attendees of the class are welcome to wear masks. • Optional: favorite scissors for small snipping
• Optional: close-up glasses
• Optional: notebook

Class Materials Include:

• 3 fabric patches with different edge finishes
  
• Needle, thread, and a selection of extra fabrics
• Printed stitching patterns
• Erasable marker

Class Refund/Cancellation Policy

Cancellations made up to 14 days prior to the first class meeting will be refunded or, at the participant's option, used to pay for another class. Two Hands Paperie will retain a $10 processing fee for EACH class cancelled by a participant. After 14 days, there is no refund or credit. In addition, the fee for a class cancelled within this 14-day timeframe by a participant cannot be transferred to pay for another class. These policies are to ensure that teachers are compensated for their investment in materials and in time spent preparing for the class. We reserve the right to cancel a class if fewer than 3 students enroll 48 hours prior to the scheduled class time. If for any reason Two Hands Paperie cancels a class, students will be called at the phone number on file and refunded the FULL class fee.

Instructor Bio

Proud to hail from the Midwest, Nanci is a daughter of an avid quilter and volunteer. Before becoming a Mom herself she worked in the nonprofit world of arts administration in Southern California. She confesses to developing a crush on every art form she touches. Love affairs include letterpress, stained glass, graphic design, botanical illustration, needlework (sashiko, embroidery), and all things fabric (pattern design, piecing, hand appliqué, quilting). 

Nanci’s been teaching various crafts for about 10 years and is known for bringing communities together to make creative and useful items for local nonprofits. She now crafts in a variety of fiber and paper arts and indulges in her love of letterpress at Black Dog Studios. Oh, and you can find her working at Two Hands Paperie most Sundays. Two little known facts about Nanci – her rescue dog Poppy curls up under her workspace whenever she creates, and she was a World Champion in the Sweet Adelines International Competition. The organization, founded in 1945, is a worldwide nonprofit music education program for women that’s focused on barbershop harmonies. All we can say is Wow!
