Instructor:
Fran Meneley
Limit: 6 students. All participants must be 15 years or older.

Class Details

Join local artist Fran Meneley in making a sweet, hand stitched pocket altar that requires only a few embroidery stitches. It’s a lovely project for experienced stitchers as well as an easy one for beginners. Fran was inspired to create hers by the plastic ones she picked up during her travels in Mexico and New Mexico. These small devotional altars easily fit in a pocket or travel bag as a private reminder to owners of their connection to the divine.

Fran’s interpretation is non-denominational, focusing as it does on images of the divine feminine in Mexican devotional retablos dating to the 18th century. All materials are provided: tea dyed wool felt, beautiful wool yarn for the embroidery, needles, and a button closure. Fran shares a special technique for hand coloring the small saint that’s sewn inside the pocket altar. Choose one from among the three images she provides.

You’ll likely finish your secret pocket altar by the end of class, but it’s easy to complete at home if not. Treat yourself to a wonderfully creative and relaxing afternoon of stitching and making with Fran!

An email will be sent to participants the Monday before the class. Classes with homework may receive pre-class info earlier.  No email?
