Class Details

Spring is a glorious time as leaves unfurl and buds burst into colorful flowers. The world is bright again, and it’s time to celebrate! Santa Fe artist Jone Hallmark embraces any excuse, and she uses these fun little arches to brighten all occasions – birthdays, graduations, weddings, anniversaries, new babies, Mother’s Day . . . you get the picture. Simply put, the arches she creates are happy-making. They include miniature flowers, small embellishments, and a sweet little banner (or several). Celebrate a day or a person that’s special to you with an arch using your favorite colors and a personal theme!

Start by painting the wooden base with decorative designs composed of simple brush strokes. The designs are easy to learn by following the examples in Jone’s hand drawn booklet, and you have time to practice them before doing the actual painting. (Trust her – she’s serious when she says no drawing experience is needed to create something charming.)

Form the arch itself by twisting wire into a curved structure to hold flowers, other decorations, and a banner with your message. You’ll learn several clever techniques for making flowers from bits and pieces of this and that – for example, deconstructed fake flowers, small millenary items, and scraps punched from decorative paper and book pages. Jone also shows you various ways to make banners. For something extra, make and add a small “pot” of flowers at the base of the arch.

Jone has a special touch when it comes to embellishments, and she shares her tools and tricks and treasures during class. Look closely at her arches. Notice the details, such as a curlicue of wire here, some bright ribbon artfully wrapped there, a painted little bird singing its heart out, and beads strung on the banner. Let your imagination run wild! And celebrate!!

This online class will be recorded and made available to class participants for 10 days after the class.

    Instructor Bio

Santa Fe artist Jone Hallmark, who says of herself, “I tend to work in a two-inch square!”, has created her own little world of magical delights. Each tiny wonder – from the cleverest fox or hedgehog to a charming parade of flower-bearing young girls – is handcrafted from paper clay, wire, wood, and other tiny bits and pieces. Her sophisticated yet simple designs show the influence of both her father’s Scandinavian heritage and the intricate painted miniatures she collected when living in Switzerland. Her affinity for using small, ordinary objects comes from her mom, also a graphic designer and artist. She taught Jone that you can make just about anything you want instead of going to a store to buy it. Jone’s creative life started on the floor of her father’s studio, where she sat as a child surrounded by brushes, paints, and a treasure of paper.

Her passion for design eventually led to work developing store displays, award-winning lines of decorated papers, and the beloved Bryce and Madeline stickers. One day, after twenty years of licensing her artwork for other people’s products, Jone realized that she needed to get back to basics and simplify. In that moment, her tiny little world was born. Now she spends her time teaching, drawing, painting, and making huge messes on every available flat surface. See her work on Instagram at @jonehallmark.

Loved the class! I felt very lucky to be able to take a class with Jone! Zoom was perfect for me as I am in NJ. The pace was good and a great relaxing way to spend a Saturday afternoon. I am very pleased with my arches and have been contemplating all of the creative possibilities!
