Beer Journal - A Repurposing Story NEW! In-Store Class

Instructor:
 Richard Pollock-Nelson
Limit: 6 students. All participants must be 15 years or older.

Class Details:

Talk about repurposing . . . this clever little journal is a fun example! It perfectly suits Colorado, a brewery-filled state whose capital has been dubbed the Napa Valley of Beer. Breweries compete to distinguish their brands with eye-catching and eclectic artwork, which inspired bookmaker Richard Pollock-Nelson to create his beer journals. They’re a fun project, with more to them than just the colorful covers and decorative stitching on the spine. Once you’ve done one, making more is straightforward.

Richard provides a choice of covers with pages measured to fit. The average size of the journal is 3-⅜ x 5-⅝ inches – handy for tucking into a pocket or small purse. You’ll sew everything together with a French Link stitch, which is a decorative, exposed spine binding that allows the blank pages to open flat. Richard has a clever technique for attaching the covers in a way that’s designed to hide the knots in the binding. The class beer journal has blank pages, but they could be anything. Richard, for example, made a golf journal for his nephew with covers from the nephew’s favorite beer and score sheets printed from the internet. The final part of the class is making a companion slip cover from reinforced paper prepared by Richard. He’ll show you how he does it so you can later make your own.

The class is suited to beginning bookmakers while also providing some unique techniques for those with experience. Enjoy repurposing something that’s usually recycled. Such colorful artwork from which to choose!

    Instructor Bio

Richard Pollock-Nelson’s love of fountain pens led him to bookbinding. While at the San Francisco International Pen Show in 2012 he bought himself a handmade journal. Looking at it, Richard decided he could make one himself. Though he hadn’t had any classes and, in his words, didn’t know what he was doing, he figured things out. His Christmas gifts that year? Lovely handmade journals with faux cowhide covers! Richard has since embraced bookbinding, attending advanced classes and earning a certification in bookbinding from the San Francisco Center for the Book. He’s best known to the Two Hands Paperie Community for the unusual cigar box journals carried in the store. Two of them were displayed at the American Bookbinders Museum in San Francisco during an annual exhibit held by the Hand Bookbinders of California. Besides cigar boxes, Richard also enjoys working with goat leather, Japanese paper, hand marbled papers, and other specialty materials. Richard still loves fountain pens and continues to attend pen shows, but now as an exhibitor selling his handmade journals. friendly. Learn more about Richard’s work at www.handbounddesigns.com.
