Class Details
The tiny world of Santa Fe artist Jone Hallmark is populated with the most amazing collection of mushrooms! Tending to a small “garden” of them is this adorable mushroom family – two parents and their wee moppet. The three of them make a sweet tableau. Join Jone to create a little mushroom family from wooden peg dolls and pieces of this and that, and to make some mushrooms for their garden. This class is a great exercise in putting together little scenes and painting the patterns that are characteristic of Jone’s work. (Our favorite “flower” is a small mushroom growing out of a vintage wooden spool.)
Jone starts the class with some exercises so that you can warm up your hand and practice how to vary the stroke of the paint brush for different effects. The items for the mushroom family and their garden are painted in acrylic paint with simple lines and dots. The designs are easy to learn, even if you’ve never held a brush before. Jone demonstrates how to create tone on tone patterns and layer colors on top of each other. Follow the patterns from the little booklet Jone’s drawn for the class or enjoy making up your own. Then paint, paint, paint!
Once you’ve finished painting, assemble all the pieces and set your mushroom family and their garden on a little platform. Poof! You’ll think you’ve been transported to the fabled woods of fairy tales! Come spend some time with Jone in her little wonderland. It’s a delightful place.
This online class will be recorded and made available to class participants for 14 days after the class.

Instructor Bio
Santa Fe artist Jone Hallmark, who says of herself, “I tend to work in a two-inch square!”, has created her own little world of magical delights. Each tiny wonder – from the cleverest fox or hedgehog to a charming parade of flower-bearing young girls – is handcrafted from paper clay, wire, wood, and other tiny bits and pieces. Her sophisticated yet simple designs show the influence of both her father’s Scandinavian heritage and the intricate painted miniatures she collected when living in Switzerland. Her affinity for using small, ordinary objects comes from her mom, also a graphic designer and artist. She taught Jone that you can make just about anything you want instead of going to a store to buy it. Jone’s creative life started on the floor of her father’s studio, where she sat as a child surrounded by brushes, paints, and a treasure of paper.
Her passion for design eventually led to work developing store displays, award-winning lines of decorated papers, and the beloved Bryce and Madeline stickers. One day, after twenty years of licensing her artwork for other people’s products, Jone realized that she needed to get back to basics and simplify. In that moment, her tiny little world was born. Now she spends her time teaching, drawing, painting, and making huge messes on every available flat surface. See her work on Instagram at @jonehallmark.
