Haiku Haiga - Poetry & Line Drawing NEW! In-Store Class
Saturday, February 17, noon-4pm
Instructor: Alix Christian
Limit: 7 students. All participants must be 15 years or older.

Class Details:

What can you do with a simple line? Boulder artist Alix Christian keeps exploring the boundaries in new ways. Her latest venture is inspired by the Japanese arts of Haiku and Haiga.

Haiku is a poetic style consisting of three short, unrhymed lines. They describe a brief moment, often ordinary, that leads to a new way of looking at things. Allen Ginsberg, renown poet of the Beat Generation, called Haiku three lines that “make the mind leap.” Haiga literally translates to “haiku picture”, and is a simple drawing that echos the theme of the Haiku. In the Zen spirit of Haiku and Haiga, Alix has created a captivating little book of poems and companion line drawings.

Alix supplies a page of Haiku to start, but she encourages you to write your own – so simple and satisfying! Example:

Oh, butterfly
I can hardly hear
the flutter of your wings.

Alix discusses Haiku, provides examples, and gives you “teasers” as an aid. Spend time creating your poems and designing how to write them out in your book. Finally, add a simplified line drawing to each. Alix provides a few drawing exercises to get you to simplify, simplify, simplify. The emphasis is on using only a few pen lines to capture the essence of your poem, just as the spare three lines capture a moment. Add a hint of color to the drawings for emphasis.

In addition to leaving class with a lovely little book, you’ll gain a Zen-like appreciation for the ordinary and a more thoughtful way of viewing the world around you.

    Instructor Bio

Alix Christian has been a tumbling tumble weed, always looking for new art adventures along the way. She grew up in Minnesota, earned a BFA in Oregon, began a graphic design career in Dallas, moved to Santa Fe to become a real artist, stayed until her money ran out, and then moved on to Amarillo where she completed an MFA and became a professor of Fine Art and Computer Graphics. She took a short jaunt to Detroit during the worst of the economic downturn (an eye-opening experience) and then. . . and then . . . landed in Colorado, where she hopes to stay for a very long time. Though now settled down Alix continues adventuring in her art. She’s played with fire to create encaustic paintings, liberally used her graphic design experience and love of type for creative art journaling, developed a distinctive style of lettering, played with layering and color in collage pieces, created 3D art with wire and rusty bits, distilled her drawings into simple lines, thrown herself into watercolors, and now focuses on large scale water medium paintings. She delights in teaching it all to others. Students can always expect a lot of laughter and fun in her classes, along with some serious attention to technique. Alix’s work has been exhibited as far south as Texas and New Mexico, in the north from Minnesota to Michigan, and across the Atlantic in Assisi, Italy.
