Class Details
Santa Fe artist Jone Hallmark loves, loves, loves birds, and she makes all kinds and sizes. They’re charming and whimsical, and appear frequently in her work. In this class she shows you how to mold a flock of birds from paper clay, which is a medium that she uses often. It’s a strong and lightweight clay that air dries hard (no kiln!) with reduced shrinkage and warping.
This class is a techniques-only class. Jone describes her method for working with paper clay and shows you how to mold your birds by rolling, pinching, and pulling little balls of it. Then it’s your turn to roll and pinch a bird into being. She shares a way to add wings and tails and recommends making a bunch of birds all at once. It’s easy to get into a rhythm and, in no time, you’ve made an entire flock.
Paper clay dries quickly, but your birds won’t be dry enough to paint before the end of class. Jone’s got you covered, though. She demonstrates how she paints her birds and provides a list of colors she uses, along with patterns, for you to use later. Look closely at the class photos to see some of the ways Jone displays her birds. Such fun! Jone provides a detailed instructional sheet as part of the class. You’ll receive it as a PDF via email for printing.
This online class will be recorded and made available to class participants for 14 days after the class.
Class Materials
Please bring the following materials:
-
Package of paper clay. Jone uses Creative Paper Clay. She suggests buying the 4oz bag because it can dry out in the bag if not carefully sealed back up.
-
22 gauge wire
- Wet paper towels or wipes for your hands
-
Toothpicks and a piece of thick foam core (about ½” thick) for the drying rack for your flock. You could also use a recycled piece of styrofoam
- Optional: apron
There won't be any painting in class since the the paper clay has to dry. However, Jone will show sample birds that she’s painted. Here’s a list of what she uses:
These materials are not required and will not be used during the online class:
- Acrylic paints. Jone uses Deco Art Americana, which comes in small plastic bottles, but other acrylic paints are fine. The brand Folk Art is comparable in price. Following is a list of the most common Deco Art Americana colors she uses for her birds. Feel free to substitute other colors.
- Light Buttermilk (off white)
- Blue Harbor (periwinkle)
- Santa Red (true red)
- Lamp “Ebony” Black
- Honey Brown (light brown)
- Hauser Light Green (a bright-ish green)
- Hauser Medium Green (basic green)
- Hauser Dark Green (a forest or evergreen color)
- Brushes for painting with acrylics. Jone uses Artist’s Loft Golden Synthetic Brushes for Acrylic. There are 4 brushes in the pack - sizes 10/0, 5/0, 0, and 1.
- Mod Podge Matte and a brush. (Use the Mod Podge after painting to provide a protective coat on your bird.)

Instructor Bio
Santa Fe artist Jone Hallmark, who says of herself, “I tend to work in a two-inch square!”, has created her own little world of magical delights. Each tiny wonder – from the cleverest fox or hedgehog to a charming parade of flower-bearing young girls – is handcrafted from paper clay, wire, wood, and other tiny bits and pieces. Her sophisticated yet simple designs show the influence of both her father’s Scandinavian heritage and the intricate painted miniatures she collected when living in Switzerland. Her affinity for using small, ordinary objects comes from her mom, also a graphic designer and artist. She taught Jone that you can make just about anything you want instead of going to a store to buy it. Jone’s creative life started on the floor of her father’s studio, where she sat as a child surrounded by brushes, paints, and a treasure of paper. Her passion for design eventually led to work developing store displays, award-winning lines of decorated papers, and the beloved Bryce and Madeline stickers. One day, after twenty years of licensing her artwork for other people’s products, Jone realized that she needed to get back to basics and simplify. In that moment, her tiny little world was born. Now she spends her time teaching, drawing, painting, and making huge messes on every available flat surface. Visit Jone's Instagram: @jonehallmark
